For Dugantsi, decorating cookies isn\u2019t just a craft \u2014 it\u2019s a way to share her Hungarian heritage, one intricately piped cookie at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI moved to the U.S. in 2007,\u201d Dugantsi explained. \u201cMy husband got a job here, and we brought our three children along. At first, I was just a mom trying to keep busy and stay creative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until Christmas in 2012 that everything changed. \u201cWe made some gingerbread cookies with the kids. It was so much fun,\u201d she said, smiling. \u201cI never stopped after that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What started as a holiday activity quickly grew into a full-blown passion project. \u201cI wasn\u2019t a professional baker back in Hungary,\u201d Dugantsi mentioned with a giggle. \u201cBut I was always a crafty person. I realized there\u2019s no way you can be a mother, have a job, and still keep a hobby. So I decided \u2014 why not make my hobby my work?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She began researching traditional Hungarian techniques and experimenting with recipes from home. \u201cGingerbread is a big part of Hungarian culture,\u201d she explained. \u201cYou see it at festivals, fairs, weddings \u2014 it\u2019s more than just a cookie. It\u2019s a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, Dugantsi\u2019s cookies are so much more than sweet treats. With designs ranging from elegant florals to Kentucky Derby horses and designs for every holiday \u2014 they\u2019re miniature edible artworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon after she began posting her creations online, the requests started pouring in. \u201cIn the first year, someone from NewJersey called and said, \u2018All I want for my birthday is a class with you.\u2019 They flew me out and paid for everything. That\u2019s when I realized \u2014 this is serious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/bowling-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/Story-1-photo1-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/bowling-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/Story-1-photo1-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/bowling-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/Story-1-photo1-1-980x653.jpg 980w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/bowling-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/06\/Story-1-photo1-1-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photography by Amanda Guy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That one class turned into a career. Dugantsi has now taught all over the U.S. and has been invited to CookieCon \u2014 an international cookie art convention \u2014 11 times. \u201cPeople who took my classes kept calling the organizers, telling them to invite me,\u201d she remembered. \u201cI wasn\u2019t part of the first round, but they added me later. And I\u2019ve been invited back every time since.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2018, she\u2019s had her own studio space in Bowling Green. \u201cBefore that, I taught at the library, cake supply stores, and even the farmers market,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it\u2019s so much nicer to have my own space. Everything\u2019s ready here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dugantsi offers both group and private classes, usually a couple of times a month at her studio at 1106 Adams St. in Bowling Green. \u201cClasses are $65 and last two to three hours,\u201d she said. \u201cBut if you bring your own group, I\u2019ll work with you. And I promise I won\u2019t leave until you finish your cookies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What draws people to her classes, beyond the artistry, is her warm and welcoming teaching style. \u201cThis has to be fun,\u201d she said. \u201cIf it\u2019s fun, you\u2019ll do it again. And if you do it again, you\u2019ll get better. But, if I yell at you, you\u2019ll never touch a piping bag again.\u201d Each class includes a gingerbread or dark chocolate cookie recipe, Hungarian in origin, except for the dark chocolate. \u201cThat one\u2019s just too good to pass up,\u201d she grinned. Students also receive icing and practice tips to take home. \u201cThe best way to practice? Start with graham crackers!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dugantsi\u2019s studio has become a destination for many visitors. A map on her wall proudly displays pins showing where her students have come from \u2014 everywhere from California to Florida. \u201cI even have big pins where I\u2019ve traveled to teach,\u201d she said. \u201cNow I just need someone from Hawaii.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With over 100 cookie designs in her catalogue and the ability to 3D-print custom cutters, there\u2019s almost nothing she can\u2019t create. \u201cIf you don\u2019t find what you want, I\u2019ll work with you to make it happen,\u201d she promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dugantsi\u2019s journey is a true testament to what can happen when you follow your passion \u2014 with a piping bag in hand and a little Hungarian sweetness in your heart. <strong>GN<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WHEN YOU walk into Tunde Dugantsi\u2019s Sugar Arts Studio in Bowling Green, you\u2019re met with the sweet aroma of gingerbread and the kind of warmth that feels like home.
