Club member Judy Mann said, \u201cWe took lessons in 1985, and we\u2019ve danced ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With over 100 calls, Mann suggests that anyone wanting to learn modern Western square dancing experience it firsthand by watching one Thursday night. There are many moving parts, but you\u2019re ready to square up once you\u2019ve learned the calls. And don\u2019t forget your manners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mann said, \u201cOne thing about square dancing is it promotes etiquette and manners. Eight people are in a square: two head couples and two side couples. When you finish a tip (that\u2019s when you\u2019re up dancing, and then the caller\u2019s finished), you always shake hands and thank everybody in that square.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s great exercise and good clean fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere\u2019s no alcohol whatsoever,\u201d she said. \u201cYou couldn\u2019t concentrate long if you\u2019d been drinking because you have to pay attention and not let your mind wander. When one person messes up, it breaks down the whole square. Everybody\u2019s got to be in sync, and if you let your mind wander, bad things are going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Things move quickly, and you have to be ready to move with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou have to pay attention,\u201d Mann said. \u201cUsually, when he makes a call, there\u2019s a standard call behind it. But if you\u2019re not careful, sometimes the caller wants to make sure you\u2019re paying attention, and you\u2019ll need to do something different. If you\u2019ve anticipated wrong, you\u2019ve missed,\u201d said Mann. <\/p>\n\n\n\n For the most part, you can leave the flouncy dress and petticoat at home and dance in your jeans and polo shirt. The traditional square dance costumes are generally reserved for exhibition dances and conventions. Lessons are available if you want to learn more and join the club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She said, \u201cA lot of people come for the exercise. It\u2019s fun, good exercise, and it\u2019s good fellowship. We\u2019ve been dancing with some of these people for a while now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mann can\u2019t say enough about their caller\u2019s skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cJet wants you to dance, and that\u2019s a good thing. He\u2019s so smooth with it that you don\u2019t want it to end. He keeps you going. He doesn\u2019t call a call and wait for everybody to get home and start and then call another. He\u2019s fluid,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So chase your neighbor and scatter scoot on over to the Fayetteville Recreation Center some Thursday night and see for yourself. You\u2019ll be glad you did.
