His father moved into an old cotton mill to start again. They shared space. They shared equipment. They shared the rhythm of rebuilding. What began as a hobby slowly gained traction, especially as Thumper realized he could no longer divide his focus between music production and woodworking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventually, the side hustle became the main business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When he finally stepped fully into cabinetry, it came with his father\u2019s blessing \u2014 and a bit of worn-out honesty. Cabinet making, Thumper said, can take a toll on your body. At one point, his dad told him, \u201cWell, son, I can\u2019t make \u2019em all, and I hope I never see another cabinet a day in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, his father is fully retired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Southern Woodcrafters now offers both custom and prefabricated cabinetry for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and
built-ins. Custom pieces are made from scratch to exact dimensions and design preferences. Prefabricated or semi-custom options provide quicker turnaround and greater budget flexibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The company also designs and builds custom furniture \u2014 dining tables, vanities, entertainment centers \u2014 pieces meant to complement cabinetry and reflect the personality of a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thumper\u2019s process begins not in the shop, but in conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When a client calls about new cabinets, he schedules an initial visit to the home. He looks at the space outside and inside, he said, to get a sense of the home\u2019s style and architecture. Around here, he noted, most homeowners lean transitional, blending traditional elements with modern living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From there, he develops 3D renderings to help clients visualize the finished space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Budgets, however, can be more delicate. \u201cI try to get budgets,\u201d he said, acknowledging that many people are wary of discussing numbers upfront. Still, he sees the relationship as foundational. \u201cHighly relational,\u201d he said. Clients are not customers in a transactional sense. The end product depends entirely on personal preference, daily habits, and long-term goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Technology has changed the industry in recent years. Clients often arrive with Google images or AI-generated renderings that shape expectations. \u201cWhat they\u2019re seeing online isn\u2019t real,\u201d Thumper said, though he does not dismiss the inspiration. \u201cI welcome Pinterest.\u201d His team does its best to replicate styles that may not physically exist yet, using those images as a starting point for real-world solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe create custom solutions for the goals of spaces,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Southern Woodcrafters currently employs three people. His father-in-law has been with him the longest. Thumper said hiring family has proven to be a good thing. He also brought on his dad\u2019s longtime helper, Robert, who now handles cabinet finishes. Three months ago, he hired another installer, Jay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is deliberate about growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m slow about hiring because\u2026 I want to be sure whoever I hire is a quality person in their character,\u201d he said. Skill matters. Integrity matters more. \u201cWe treat clients with dignity and respect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n That emphasis on character extends beyond the shop floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thumper and his wife, Alie, have been together since 2000. They are raising three children under their roof: Jessa, 14; Nolan, 9; and a 16-year-old nephew whom Thumper said he considers a son, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cabinet making, as demanding as it can be, offers flexibility. Alie is a nurse with long, irregular hours. Thumper often plays \u201cdaddy taxi,\u201d making it to ballgames, school functions, and practices. The balance is intentional. He knows firsthand how physically taxing the trade can be, and he prioritizes time with his children while he can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He would love for one of them to follow in his footsteps, but he leaves the door open. The shop is available if they want it. Their path, however, is theirs to choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For Thumper, woodworking is not about being a builder. \u201cWe\u2019re cabinet makers, not builders,\u201d he said, drawing a clear line between structure and craftsmanship. His work exists at eye level \u2014 in the details of drawer glides, the alignment of doors, and the feel of a finished surface under a hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The tools may have evolved since his childhood in his father\u2019s shop. The renderings are digital now. The inspirations arrive via smartphone. But the core remains the same \u2014 measure twice, cut once. Honor the craft. Honor the client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From a burned-down shop to a shared cotton mill workspace to a growing business of his own, Thumper Pigg\u2019s journey has been shaped by resilience, relationships, and reverence for a trade passed from one generation to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In every cabinet door and custom table, there is both inheritance and intention \u2014 proof that character, like craftsmanship, is built one careful cut at a time.
