Children 12 and under were eligible to participate and win prizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe event is a staple of Fayetteville and also brings in families from nearby cities and counties,\u201d said Nathan Browning, Fayetteville\u2019s director of parks and recreation. \u201cThanks to the generous donations of businesses such as Walmart, Holt\u2019s IGA, and Gerald\u2019s Foodland, we were able to serve 700 hot dogs to the children and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several other local businesses made monetary donations or provided prizes. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) and the local Elks Lodge joined the Fayetteville Parks and Recreation Department in hosting the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/fayetteville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/2-5-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26049\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/fayetteville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/2-5-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/fayetteville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/2-5-980x653.jpg 980w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/fayetteville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/2-5-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photography by Brooke Snyder<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the event\u2019s success was a culmination of numerous organizations, Browning credited one individual as an invaluable resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDarion George has always worked on the fishing rodeo, mainly behind the scenes. During the event, he is the emcee and relies on his family as assistants throughout the day \u2014 taking pictures, interacting with kids, weighing fish, and delivering encouraging words to all,\u201d Browning said. \u201cWithout Darion, I\u2019m not sure if we could pull it off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Jr. Rodeo began at 7 a.m. with registration, and by 8 a.m., children lined the water\u2019s edge hoping to catch their first fish. The pond was stocked with more than 2,500 pounds of catfish before the event, ensuring few participants went home disappointed. Applauded both for his expertise and tenacity, Dyer began fishing at age 5. By 13, he was already competing in tournaments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born without any lower limbs, no left arm, and a partial right arm, Dyer fishes without special equipment. He casts by tucking the rod under his jaw and whipping it with a quick left-to-right motion. He reels in fish by holding the rod under his chin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to his website, Dyer said his most difficult step in the fishing process is tying lures. Nevertheless, he gets the job done \u2014 tying knots with his tongue, unhooking fish with his teeth, and amazing everyone who knows his story. It\u2019s a community opportunity,\u201d said Barry Cross, TWRA Region 2 communications and outreach coordinator. \u201cWe are thankful to those who attend and for the many community sponsors that support the efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Cross, fishing is for everyone.
