“I taught history, driver’s education, and anything else they wanted a new teacher to teach,” he said.

Over the course of 16 years in education, Mansfield wore nearly every hat imaginable. He coached basketball, served as principal at Taft Elementary, and stepped into whatever role was needed.

Teaching came naturally. His mother and father were both educators, making the classroom feel almost like a family business.

Not long after beginning his teaching career, Mansfield entered local politics, beginning a decades-long chapter of public service that continued until just a few months ago. Many know him best for his years as Lincoln County’s mayor, but public office never replaced his love for local history.

If anything, it strengthened it.

He became an avid student of the area’s past, developing a particular admiration for author and Civil War chronicler Sam Watkins. Ask Mansfield about Stone Bridge, Gen. George Crook, or nearly any significant event in Lincoln County history, and chances are he’ll have not only the facts but also a fascinating story that ties everything together.

“I like those connections that you find in a story that just bring things together.”

For Mansfield, those connections don’t happen by accident.

Rarely far from Mansfield is a well-worn leather-bound notebook filled with handwritten notes, reminders, and historical details he’s gathered over the years.

“I’m keeping notes to remind me,” he laughed. “I pick up information or stories here and there. I listen to others, too. I then mark it down. You’ve got to remember stuff like this.”

He’s also constantly reading, researching, and listening to longtime residents whose memories preserve details that may never appear in a history book. But collecting information is only part of the process.

The real gift comes in how he tells it.

Mansfield has a way of building anticipation, weaving together people, places, and moments until listeners suddenly realize they’re seeing their hometown through entirely new eyes. His stories often leave audiences surprised that so much history has existed just beyond their front doors.

That talent keeps his calendar full.

Schools across Lincoln County frequently invite Mansfield to speak with students about local history, introducing young people to stories many have never heard.

“Most of what I share with them is Lincoln County or Fayetteville history. Most don’t even know that such history exists,” he added.

For Mansfield, those visits are about much more than dates and names.

“I want them to see and become interested in how they got here,” he added. “Also, who’s responsible for them getting here. Not necessarily sacrifices as much as just being the one who decided to do things that brought the whole thing together.”

He believes every community is built by countless individuals whose choices shape the generations that follow. Understanding those decisions helps people appreciate not only where they live but also their responsibility to preserve its story for those who come next.

That responsibility does weigh on him.

“It makes me a little nervous,” he explained. “Because the more you tell it, the more you want to make sure it’s right. So sometimes you have to, you know, put a crutch under, say, now, this is the way I heard it.”

In a world where communities continue to grow and change, Mansfield hopes those stories never disappear.

“I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else or be anywhere else because I’m as southern and country as they come,” he said. “Of course, everything’s going to change, and everything is gradually changing all the time, but I’m enjoying it while I’m here. And I’m enjoying telling the story of my hometown.” GN

Jerry Mansfield has spent a lifetime serving Lincoln County as a teacher, coach, principal, public servant, and county mayor.
