Get to Know Bedford: Local History (All Ages)

April 14, 2023 @ 12:00 am

“Get to Know Bedford” is a series of events to give the Bedford County community a chance to learn about different local organizations that work with the community and what they do. These events will be free and open to all ages. Whether you are new to Bedford County or are a life-long local, take an opportunity to get involved with the community!

This week’s discussion will focus on local history resources, and will feature speakers from the Gilliland Historical Resource Center and Bedford County Archives!

The Gilliland Historical Resource Center provides important historical materials and exhibits which covers many facets of local African American history, from James S. Gilliland, who built the original Gilliland House where the Historical Resource Center now resides in the late 1800’s, to the early 20th century and the Bedford County Training School, which set state and national football records with their team the Fighting Tigers.

The Bedford County Archives preserves both government records and provides access to early court records and other historical reference materials. They aim to provide anyone researching the local history of Bedford County access to their wealth of historical photos and documents.

Learn about the history of these organizations, as well as a look at some of the resources they provide to the community, and get the chance to ask the representatives about their work in a question & answer session!
