Jesus<\/em> <em>and the 12 stopped in to visit the home of<\/em> <em>Martha and Mary, in Bethany. Through the<\/em> <em>swirling steam of the boiling pots, Martha<\/em> <em>glimpsed Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus.<\/em> <em>Sitting was a luxury she couldn\u2019t afford<\/em> <em>with all the cooking to do. Surely Mary<\/em> <em>knew she needed her help in the kitchen.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I bet Martha really wanted to sit with<\/em> <em>Jesus. I imagine she told herself she would<\/em>  <em>as soon as she finished the task at hand.<\/em> <em>She meant well, and the desire was sincere,<\/em> <em>but the tyranny of the next urgent thing<\/em> <em>forced itself before her like a spoiled child<\/em> <em>demanding to be reckoned with or else.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And while we\u2019re boldly imagining,<\/em> <em>suppose Mary really meant to help<\/em> <em>Martha or even planned to help Martha<\/em> <em>as soon as Jesus paused in His teaching.<\/em> <em>But perhaps He alluded to something<\/em> <em>that left Mary believing He\u2019d explain it<\/em> <em>in more detail, so she lingered longer. She<\/em> <em>knew she preferred Martha\u2019s burning youknew-<\/em> <em>I\u2013needed-you speech over missing<\/em> <em>Jesus\u2019 words, sensing a possibility that their<\/em> <em>days with Him were numbered.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Martha was worried and anxious<\/em> <em>over lunch when the bread of life was in<\/em> <em>the house.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Samaritan woman at the well was<\/em> <em>looking for something to control. She\u2019d<\/em> <em>go to the well at noon, the hottest hour,<\/em> <em>to draw water in order to avoid drawing<\/em> <em>gossiping crowds. Five husbands and<\/em> <em>living with a man that she wasn\u2019t married<\/em> <em>to gave them plenty to talk about. She<\/em> <em>could avoid the heat of their condemning<\/em> <em>gazes and whispers of disapproval. This<\/em> <em>was something she could control.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>She was unnamed in the story. Perhaps<\/em> <em>her lifestyle caused her to be guarded in<\/em> <em>sharing it, her shame naming her.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Strain and listen for the low screech<\/em> <em>of the wheel that lets down the rope with<\/em> <em>the bucket day after day, sweat trickling<\/em> <em>relentlessly down her back. She was<\/em> <em>looking to fill the caverness hole in her<\/em> <em>heart until she encountered the living<\/em> <em>water; Jesus.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Look at their shoulders, Martha and<\/em> <em>the well woman, how they\u2019re keened<\/em> <em>forward under the weight of their loads.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Feel the heat \u2013 the scorching<\/em> <em>noonday sun, the steam from the boiling<\/em> <em>iron kettle pots.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What would one good, long drink do<\/em> <em>to satisfy parched lips?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Like Martha and the Samaritan<\/em> <em>woman, we stand, our hands reaching<\/em> <em>for the potholder, glancing over our<\/em> <em>shoulders at Mary as she sits at Jesus\u2019<\/em> <em>feet, straining to hear a word of<\/em> <em>encouragement or a nugget of truth. We<\/em> <em>let down our empty buckets, tired and<\/em> <em>weary of the world\u2019s demands and so<\/em> <em>many times draw it up only half-filled or<\/em> <em>empty altogether.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we don&#8217;t have to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Time spent with Jesus will refresh<\/em> <em>and renew our spirits and fuel us for the<\/em> <em>day ahead. He is the one thing needful,<\/em> <em>and He is always waiting for us to come<\/em> <em>to Him with our empty buckets and<\/em> <em>weary hearts.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Our time, our heart, and our presence<\/em> <em>are all He needs.
