Growing up, Williams attended Broadview Elementary and the School of the Good Shepherd before moving on to J.D. Jackson Jr. High, now South Middle School, where his passion for music deepened. Under the guidance of his band teacher, Mr. Robinson, he learned discipline and precision. \u201cHe taught us not just to play, but to play correctly,\u201d Williams said. \u201cHe instilled respect for the music and the process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Williams\u2019 earliest performances took place at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, where his family was deeply involved in the music ministry. His mother served as minister of music, his stepfather played the keyboard, and his great-grandmother, Pearl Francis, was part of the mother board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe pastor at the time, Rev. Ernest Buchanan, was firm but kind,\u201d Williams recalled. \u201cHe gave us room to grow musically.\u201d Rev. Buchanan\u2019s son, Philip, also played an influential role. \u201cPhilip was my first introduction to contemporary gospel through his group, Mercy,\u201d Williams said. \u201cThose concerts were unforgettable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was within those church walls that Williams\u2019 love for the piano was born. \u201cMy mother gave me my first lesson,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom that moment, I was drawn in. I started playing songs at church, and that built my confidence. It showed me that music wasn\u2019t just for entertainment, it could serve and uplift others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n When Williams\u2019 family later moved to Memphis, his musical world expanded. \u201cBeing born there, I always knew Memphis was a music city,\u201d he said. \u201cBut moving back made it tangible. You could go out any night and hear a live band \u2014 music was everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Williams went on to graduate from LeMoyne-Owen College, an experience that shaped both his musical abilities and leadership skills. \u201cCollege connected me with incredible artists,\u201d he said. \u201cThose relationships opened doors I never imagined and helped shape who I am today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n After college, Williams received an opportunity that would redefine his path, a chance to travel internationally with the B.B. King All-Star Band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat experience changed everything,\u201d he said. \u201cSeeing the world while doing what I love made it clear this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The tour offered more than exposure; it provided perspective. \u201cIt taught me professionalism, adaptability, and gratitude,\u201d Williams said. \u201cEvery night was a lesson in how powerful music can be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Williams has since performed alongside icons such as Stephanie Mills, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, and Chaka Khan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m blessed to serve as music director for Stephanie Mills,\u201d he said. \u201cWatching her dedication and work ethic is inspiring. She\u2019s taught me to stay authentic and to always remain a student of the craft.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those experiences have shaped his approach to excellence. \u201cWorking with artists of that caliber shows you that greatness is built on consistency, humility, and preparation,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have to be willing to learn every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n With professional success comes pressure, but Williams credits faith and family for keeping him grounded. \u201cGod is at the forefront of everything I do,\u201d he said. \u201cHe gave me the gift and the opportunities, so I move through life with gratitude.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n His wife, Beonka, and their daughter, Bella Grace, are his greatest sources of balance and strength. \u201cMy wife is my heart and heartbeat,\u201d Williams said. \u201cShe\u2019s my biggest supporter, always encouraging me and helping me stay focused. I wouldn\u2019t be where I am without her. And my daughter, Bella Grace, inspires me daily. My family keeps me centered no matter how demanding life becomes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Williams believes his story demonstrates that success is built on more than talent. \u201cTalent and hard work can take you far, but I always add one more thing \u2014 character,\u201d he said. \u201cThose three together remove the ceiling. Talent might open the door, hard work helps you grow, but character is what keeps you there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking ahead, he\u2019s committed to mentoring young musicians from small towns like Winchester. \u201cI want the next generation to know that anything is possible if you\u2019re willing to put in the work,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are no shortcuts. As you climb, stay humble and give the same encouragement you hope to receive.
