Today, McCullough\u2019s work is centered in the medical field, where she supports individuals recovering from strokes and other neurological conditions that affect speech, language, and swallowing. \u201cOften, I\u2019m one of the first people they meet after receiving their diagnosis,\u201d she explained. \u201cIn inpatient rehab, I help establish baselines and set goals. In home health, I continue that process as patients return to familiar environments by helping them rebuild confidence and communicate effectively with their loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For McCullough, every patient represents a story of resilience. \u201cCommunication isn\u2019t only about speaking,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s about connection, and helping people find their voice again after loss is an incredible privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked if there was a defining moment that confirmed her career path, she smiled. \u201cThere have been several,\u201d she said. \u201cI can still picture children who said their first true words during therapy and then began talking with their peers. Those moments are priceless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n She fondly recalled one particular story. \u201cOne of my first patients had been on a pureed diet for a long time. After many therapy sessions, I surprised him with biscuits and sausage gravy from Sunrise in Winchester. Seeing his face light up reminded me exactly why I do this work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Beyond the breakthroughs, McCullough finds meaning in the quieter moments like helping a patient recall their spouse\u2019s name, greet their child, or whisper \u201cI love you.\u201d \u201cThose are the moments that stay with me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This year, McCullough received the Mercy Award, which recognizes individuals who exemplify compassion, service, and a commitment to others. \u201cI was completely shocked and deeply humbled,\u201d she shared. \u201cIt means so much to me personally, but also to the field of speech-language pathology. Many people don\u2019t fully understand the scope of what we do, so to have that recognized is truly special. It reminds me that I\u2019m right where I\u2019m meant to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The essence of mercy is simple for McCullough: treating others the way you want to be treated. \u201cThat\u2019s what I strive for every day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She is candid about the emotional demands of her profession. \u201cThis work can be heavy,\u201d she admitted. \u201cBut I have a mantra I use with my patients \u2014 and myself \u2014 called, \u2018Find the glitter.\u2019 When you\u2019re facing hard days, you have to look for the small victories. Perhaps a patient said a new word or swallowed a little more easily than the day before. That\u2019s the glitter. That\u2019s what keeps us going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n McCullough\u2019s impact extends far beyond her clinical work. She spent seven years in education across Sevier County, Grundy County, and Manchester City Schools, where she cultivated a passion for advocacy. \u201cI loved my time in the schools,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s where I learned to speak up for students, teachers, and families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now, she channels that same passion as an adjunct professor at her alma mater, Middle Tennessee State University. \u201cIt\u2019s an honor to pour back into the program that shaped me,\u201d McCullough said. \u201cI love helping students bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application.\u201d Her message to future clinicians is clear: Be passionate. Be curious. Be an advocate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At Highpoint Health-Winchester, McCullough continues to advance her clinical expertise and lead with innovation.
