\u201cHe told me, \u2018Stay in and make a career out of it,\u2019\u201d Rowe recalled. \u201cWhen I looked at the benefits and opportunities, they outweighed the civilian side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of his earliest deployment experiences remains clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe first thing was stepping off the aircraft and the heat hitting you in the face \u2014 it took your breath away,\u201d he said. \u201cThen hearing the sergeant say, \u2018Load up on MREs (meals ready to eat) and water \u2014 it might be a while before resupply.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As part of an engineering unit, Rowe contributed to rebuilding infrastructure, including the construction of what became known as \u201cTiger Beach,\u201d an area where soldiers could spend their limited downtime before combat operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daily responsibilities required both physical endurance and technical precision. Equipment maintenance, training exercises, and operational readiness were routine expectations. These responsibilities reinforced consistency and attention to detail, particularly in high-pressure environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rowe\u2019s leadership approach developed over time and was shaped by both experience and upbringing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was always willing to follow, but when the time came, I took the lead,\u201d he explained. He credits his father for instilling resilience early in life. \u201cHe always told me, \u2018If you fall, get back up.\u2019\u201d That mindset carried into his leadership style. \u201cI didn\u2019t always have the right answers, but teamwork makes the dream work. You can learn from anyone, just take what works for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Later in his career, Rowe returned to Winchester in a recruiting role. The assignment allowed him to work directly with individuals from his hometown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI could show them what the military had done for me,\u201d he said. \u201cI shared pictures, experiences, and the opportunities available to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n For Rowe, recruiting involved more than explaining benefits \u2014 it required honest guidance and meaningful accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou\u2019re helping someone make a decision that can change their life,\u201d he said. \u201cThat made me proud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rowe is also direct about the challenges of military life. Extended time away from family was one of the most difficult aspects. Deployments, training cycles, and duty assignments often meant missing major life events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou miss graduations, birthdays, and sometimes even the birth of a child,\u201d he said. \u201cThe military isn\u2019t easy, but it can be rewarding depending on how you adapt to it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Transitioning to civilian life presented a different set of challenges. After years of structured routine and defined roles, adjusting to a different pace required patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou\u2019re returning to a place in life you haven\u2019t been for a while,\u201d Rowe explained. \u201cThe job market is different, and so is the cost of living.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He emphasized that the skills developed during military service remain applicable. “Discipline and leadership carry over \u2014 you just have to take it one day at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Throughout his career and beyond, Rowe has relied on principles that guided him early on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cA coach once told me, \u2018Winners never quit, and quitters never win,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve shared that with a lot of people over the years.\u201d That mindset reflects his approach to both service and life after the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking back, Rowe offers practical advice to those considering enlistment. \u201cMake sure anything a recruiter tells you is in writing,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd take advantage of your education benefits while you\u2019re in.\u201d His perspective reflects both experience and a clear understanding of the opportunities available through military service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cary Rowe\u2019s career spans more than two decades of active duty across multiple regions and operations.
