{"id":21408,"date":"2024-02-17T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-17T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/hendersonville\/?p=21408"},"modified":"2024-02-16T17:16:58","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T17:16:58","slug":"vanderbilts-jameson-wharton-tackles-cancer-with-charity-football-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/hendersonville\/vanderbilts-jameson-wharton-tackles-cancer-with-charity-football-game\/","title":{"rendered":"Vanderbilt\u2019s Jameson Wharton Tackles Cancer With Charity Football Game"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>J<\/strong>AMESON WHARTON, a standout player for the Vanderbilt football team, is making an impact not just on the field but also in the lives of people battling cancer with his annual event, \u201cFootball for the Cure.\u201d His philanthropy journey began at the tender age of 9, inspired by a loss that struck close to home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI started when I was 9 years old, and really, my Aunt Susie had passed away from ovarian cancer, so I went to my grandma\u2019s house and just started thinking up the idea,\u201d Wharton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He described how he initially came up with the idea: \u201cI drew pictures of jerseys and of the event on some paper plates, and my mom saw them. She said, \u2018We need to get you a notebook; these are like really good ideas.\u2019 So my mom\u2019s the one who said, \u2018We gotta make this a real thing,\u2019 and that\u2019s how it all began in 2013.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wharton, who played football at Hendersonville High School, now plays for an NCAA Division in college. He still returns to his hometown every year to host the event that started it all.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/hendersonville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/02\/3-2-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/hendersonville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/02\/3-2-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/hendersonville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/02\/3-2-980x653.png 980w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/hendersonville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/02\/3-2-480x320.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained his motivation, saying, \u201cI\u2019m just right around the corner, so just to be able to go back to Hendersonville and do something that\u2019s fun for the kids and gives back to the community is a great feeling. I\u2019m also fortunate enough to attend Vanderbilt, where we have a hospital, so I can give back there as well.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s event, which took place at the end of October, was a massive success. Wharton shared, \u201cThis year\u2019s event was the biggest to date, with about a hundred and five kids participating, possibly more with late sign-ups. It was the biggest it\u2019s ever been, and it was amazing to see everybody coming out, excited, with parents in attendance, a DJ providing music, and a great atmosphere.\u201d For the event\u2019s 10th Anniversary, Wharton was able to raise over $7,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked about whom the funds would benefit this year, Wharton mentioned a change from previous years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUntil this year, all the proceeds have gone to the American Cancer Society, but this year, we\u2019re giving money to the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center and American Cancer Society Hope [Lodge].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/hendersonville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/02\/2-4-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/hendersonville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/02\/2-4-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/hendersonville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/02\/2-4-980x653.png 980w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/hendersonville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/02\/2-4-480x320.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Wharton\u2019s message to the community was clear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good cause, and participating only costs $5 out of your pocket. It goes to a good cause, and it\u2019s so much fun. So, for anyone who wants to come next year, know that you\u2019re always welcome. And [to] anyone who wants to donate, you\u2019re really making a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wharton expressed his hope to continue this tradition for years to come, making a lasting impact on the lives of those battling cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter where he ends up in his football career, he wants to continue to give back to his hometown.
