They see someone arrive when something has gone wrong and get to work. What they don’t always see is everything that comes with being willing to answer those calls again and again.

Our heroes spend nights away from home and witness some of the most difficult moments of people’s lives. They see things most people hope they never have to see, and then they have to keep going.

Still, people choose this life because they want to help. Veteran and firefighter Ed Becher has spent nearly 50 years doing exactly that. Becher joined the Marine Corps in May 1977, a year after graduating from high school on Long Island.

There wasn’t much work available at the time, especially for someone without a car. The military was an option, and a friend who had joined the Marines before him gave Becher a reason to consider it. So he enlisted.

After boot camp at Parris Island, Becher received orders to the Crash Fire Rescue School at NAS Memphis. It turned out to be a pretty natural fit. His father was a volunteer firefighter in their hometown.

“Guess you could say it was in my blood,” Becher said.

Photography by Morgan Elder

Nearly 50 years later, firefighting has taken Becher from the Marine Corps to communities in North Carolina and Virginia and, eventually, Huntsville. He has spent much of his adult life responding when people need help, whether that means running toward an emergency or simply being present for those who need him most.

For Becher, that’s still the simplest explanation for why he does what he does.

Being part of the Huntsville community, he said, is a continuation of the volunteer work he has done everywhere he has lived.

His years in the Marines gave him two lessons he still carries into the fire service: leadership and the value of human life. The second one, especially, shows up in the way he talks about the people he has met along the way.

There have been too many calls to count that have stayed with him. Some are difficult enough that they still occasionally surface in his nightmares. But if you ask him which experiences stand out most, Becher won’t point first to the tragic ones.

He remembers helping people who simply needed someone to hold their hand or make them smile. Moments like those matter to him because firefighting doesn’t always end when the truck leaves.

One thing Becher wishes people understood is that firefighters do care. The job can look different from the outside, where a crew arrives, handles the emergency, and eventually drives away. But the people behind those calls often remember the families they have met. Sometimes they see them again and again.

“We often see the same families on numerous occasions and become friends with them and their families,” Becher said.

Photography by Morgan Elder

Some of those families know him by name. And when he walks through the front door, he said, he will sometimes see a smile or sigh of relief.

That is the part of the job that doesn’t always make it into the headlines. It is also one of the reasons Becher has found such lasting friendships in the fire and EMS community and among the Marines he served with. After all these years, those relationships still matter.

If he has a bad day or comes away from a particularly difficult call carrying some frustration, there are people he can call. He knows they will listen.

The same is true across the military community, even if, as Becher said, the branches of service have a habit of picking on one another.

“Both the Marine Corps and the fire and EMS communities are there for each other. And the whole military community, even if we do pick on each other’s branch of service,” he shared.

In his five years here in Huntsville, Becher has watched the city evolve. He has noticed the traffic increase enough to joke that Huntsville is starting to resemble the Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia area.

If he could urge the Huntsville community to do one thing differently, it would be to remember to pull to the right and stop when an emergency vehicle approaches with its lights and sirens activated.

Photography by Morgan Elder

They don’t need to try to outrun it. They don’t need to pull into a left-turn lane directly in front of it.

Becher added, “And you don’t need to slow down just to take a photo of the accident and hopefully not cause another accident.”

After all these years, though, traffic isn’t what Becher thinks about when he looks back on his career. He is most grateful for the people.

The friends he has made, the people he has helped, and the lives he has crossed paths with. That is also what he hopes the next generation of firefighters and EMS professionals will understand.

“EMS services are callings,” he said. “To learn and understand empathy and compassion. And not just for the people of our communities but for each other.”

That may be one of the more unspoken parts of serving a community. The public sees the lights, the trucks, the uniforms, and the response.

What it doesn’t always see are the relationships that build over years, the difficult calls that stay with someone, the friend who answers the phone after a bad day, or the firefighter who walks through a familiar family’s front door and is greeted with a relieved smile. GN

When a first responder heads to work, most people see the lights, the sirens, and the uniforms.
