A former personal trainer turned pastor, he now works as a strength and conditioning coach at Mt. Juliet Christian Academy. But there\u2019s a deeper mission that drives him \u2014 one that goes beyond the weight room and into the lives of those across Tennessee who have been affected by domestic violence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the past five years, Ashley has organized the Cross Strength Ministries\u2019 annual Cross Walk, an event designed to honor and remember those who have been affected by domestic violence. But for him, this is more than just an event to raise awareness \u2014 it\u2019s a personal calling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy wife was a past victim of domestic violence, of a lot of horrible acts \u2014 childhood molestation, rape \u2014 but I never really had to go through that,\u201d Ashley said, his voice heavy with emotion. \u201cShe had the background and the knowledge from her experiences, and I wanted to say, \u2018Lord, what can I do? How can I help?\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ashley\u2019s answer came in the form of a cross. Inspired by his love for strength and power, he created an event where he would physically bear the weight of a cross, symbolizing the burdens of those who have suffered from domestic violence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGod created me to lift heavy things,\u201d he said. \u201cSo why don\u2019t you bear some burdens of those people who are in pain, the people who are in guilt and shame from the evil of domestic violence?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As he carries the large cross down North Mount Juliet Road each year, it\u2019s not just physical labor. Each cross is adorned with ribbons \u2014 purple for females affected by domestic violence, blue for males affected, and black for those lost to domestic homicides.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/lebanon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2024\/10\/1-2-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/lebanon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2024\/10\/1-2-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/lebanon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2024\/10\/1-2-980x653.png 980w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/lebanon\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2024\/10\/1-2-480x320.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose ribbons, they represent real people. There\u2019s a name attached to each one of those ribbons, and knowing that as I carry the cross &#8230; it tears at my soul,\u201d Ashley said softly. \u201cIt just breaks my heart that God would even allow me to pick up this cross and bear these burdens.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Ashley, the act of carrying the cross is not only about honoring those who have suffered but also about giving them a voice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m speaking for those who can\u2019t speak for themselves. Usually, when women stand up, the violence becomes greater. But I\u2019m here to say \u2018no more.\u2019 We need men with backbones to stand up against this evil.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His message is clear: the fight against domestic violence is one that demands courage, particularly from men.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWomen have been leading the charge for way too long,\u201d Ashley declared. \u201cMen were created to protect and defend women and children, and we\u2019re not doing our job. We need to be stronger \u2014 to man up and stand up against this evil.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Ashley, the cross isn\u2019t just a burden \u2014 it\u2019s a call to action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve torn down the natural role of men. We were created with aggression, power, and strength \u2014 not for our own benefit but to protect others. In the first year of the Cross Walk, Ashley walked 50 miles from Mt. Juliet to Lebanon and back, carrying the cross every step of the way. Five years later, despite a need for a total knee replacement, he continues the tradition, walking as far as he physically can, reminding others that the fight against domestic violence must go on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the Cross Walk will conclude at Charlie Daniels Park, where survivors, supporters, and families of victims will gather for a time of reflection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll have speakers; some of the victims may want to share their stories,\u201d Ashley explained. \u201cBut I understand if they don\u2019t. It\u2019s hard to speak about the horror of it all. And that\u2019s why we need to step up and be their voice.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many, the Cross Walk offers a sense of healing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLast year, I had ladies come up to me, just wanting to give me a hug, thanking me for bearing their burdens,\u201d Ashley recalled. \u201cI tell them, \u2018The only hope comes from the cross. That\u2019s where all the guilt, shame, and pain can be left behind.\u2019 That\u2019s why the cross is so powerful.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Ashley reflects on his journey, it\u2019s clear that his mission goes beyond one event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis evil \u2014 it\u2019s in our communities, it\u2019s in our churches. And too often, we\u2019re passive. We look the other way,\u201d he said, his voice firm. \u201cEdmund Burke said, \u2018The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.\u2019 Right now, too many of us are doing nothing, and that has to change.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through his words and actions, Ashley is challenging men and the broader community to rise up against domestic violence. \u201cI don\u2019t want people to think, \u2018Oh, what a good guy he is.\u2019 No,\u201d he insisted. \u201cI have a good God. Without Him, I\u2019m nothing. But with Him, I can pick up that cross, and together we can fight this evil.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As he prepares for this year\u2019s walk, Ashley\u2019s message to the world is simple yet profound: \u201cWe must do better. We must stop this evil.
