Even more impressive, they have a lifetime of friendship, beginning for Marilyn at the tender age of 3 when she met Derek at Sunday school. They grew up in the same town in England, attending the same church and going to the same youth group. Eventually, that friendship grew into something greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Derek thought Marilyn was gorgeous and knew they got along well. He asked her out in a park at night during a youth event. Years later, the pair were married and began their life together. Their marriage has been full of travel \u2014 both loved to visit new places, and Derek\u2019s job often took him away from home. It was his job that brought the pair to the United States and eventually home to Lynchburg, where they have now lived for over 40 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDerek was offered a job over here,\u201d Marilyn said. \u201cThe children weren\u2019t in school yet, so we decided that we might as well come and see how it was. So we came for a year, and that year has stretched.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the Norfields own Visiting Angels, where they\u2019ve served the community for years. As with everything they do, it\u2019s a team effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve just always supported each other. When he was traveling, I was raising the kids,\u201d Marilyn said. \u201cFive years ago, he was diagnosed with colon cancer, so now he\u2019s the one that stays home, and I\u2019m the one that goes out to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key, Derek said, is that they both offer 100% to each other, even when things aren\u2019t going the way you\u2019d like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you have a problem, you don\u2019t cut your partner off,\u201d Derek said. \u201cYou take special care of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/lynchburg-va\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2025\/02\/1-5-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/lynchburg-va\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2025\/02\/1-5-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/lynchburg-va\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2025\/02\/1-5-980x653.png 980w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/lynchburg-va\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2025\/02\/1-5-480x320.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Norfields have two children, seven grandchildren, and recently welcomed their first great-grandson into the world. They are no longer able to travel like they used to, but they enjoy plenty of time together watching Formula One, football, and cooking shows. Being with each other is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[We] enjoy doing a lot of the same things together,\u201d Derek said. \u201cWe\u2019re each other\u2019s best friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The years they have spent together have given them a lot of wisdom on what exactly, makes a marriage work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t give up too easily when times get hard,\u201d Marilyn said. \u201cDivorce is not the option. You work your problems out if you have difficulties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Communication is the other key, Marilyn said, as well as a mutual faith \u2014 something that has been very important to them. Recent years have brought quite a few trials, as Derek\u2019s cancer sent him to the hospital many times. Despite those circumstances, the Norfields have maintained a positive, hopeful attitude. After all, Marilyn said, they know there is a good outcome coming. Hosting negative thoughts can only start a downward spiral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything that we face, we\u2019ve had the Lord with us,\u201d Marilyn said. \u201cOur faith has carried us through a lot of things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Norfields\u2019 life of friendship and mutual support is an inspiration to couples across Lynchburg.
