\u201cA bunch of work goes into those cars, and if I didn\u2019t have my sponsors and people who worked on them, then I wouldn\u2019t be where I\u2019m at now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wyatt\u2019s race days start early and run long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou wake up early, drive about an hour or two to the track, and, from start to finish, you\u2019re constantly checking maintenance, changing tires, and adding gas. And then you\u2019ve got to go out there and run the car as hard as you can,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the stress and competition, Wyatt maintains a strong sense of sportsmanship and was nominated for his club\u2019s Music City Sportsmanship Award one year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cClean passing, not wrecking people on purpose, not trash-talking \u2014 those are good ways to show sportsmanship,\u201d he said. \u201cI always try to say good luck before a race and good job after. It sounds small, but it really matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wyatt\u2019s favorite part of race day is hanging out with the younger drivers who are just starting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI always like playing football or something with them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Drivers can start at the age of 5, so many young drivers look up to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When talking of his own heavier class, he said, \u201cOn the track, we might be competitors, but as soon as we\u2019re out of the cars, we\u2019re best friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That competitive mentorship spirit extends to his younger brother, Amos, who is 9 and already making a name for himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked about his favorite drivers, Amos excitedly said, \u201cKen Block\u2026 and after him, definitely my big brother, Wyatt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amos began racing at 6 years old after being encouraged by his grandfather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey\u2019re basically miniature versions of real cars,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019ve got motors, pedals, suspension, and they\u2019re just really fun. When I went to the Dixie, I finished second. That was a really good day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Dixie Shootout is a series of regional races where drivers from various states come to compete. There are also national events in which drivers can be involved, which can bring more than 600 cars to any event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Like his older brother, Amos has also learned to overcome fear, especially fear of crashing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI was scared of hitting the wall,\u201d he said, \u201cbut these cars are built for that. They\u2019re safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He credits hard work and practice for his multiple top-three finishes and is already setting ambitious goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMy biggest goal for this year is to get more trophies than my brother,\u201d Amos said. \u201cBut the hardest and best thing about racing [is] winning. Everyone\u2019s really competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Off the track, both boys are regular kids. Wyatt enjoys music and working on the farm, while Amos likes playing video games and dreaming up creative car designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIf I could design my car, it\u2019d be a spaceship with Bible verses on the side of it,\u201d Amos said. \u201cMostly black with blue in the background with stars and planets all over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their team name, Wild & Sunny Racing, has roots in their early family days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe had a farm and my nickname was \u2018Wild Man Wyatt,\u2019\u201d Wyatt said. \u201cWhen I was young, I called my little sister \u2018Sunny,\u2019 so we called it Wild & Sunny Farms. When I got into racing, the name stuck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Family is always at the core of their operation. Their sisters, Bowie and Jovie, support them from the sidelines. Bowie helps with social media, live streams races, and stocks snacks while Jovie plays with other racing siblings and cheers on all the drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere\u2019s never a dull moment,\u201d Wyatt said. \u201cNo one has a specific job, but if you\u2019re sitting down, someone will probably need your help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Different tracks require different setups and strategies, so key figures like the late Ernie Tuck, Scott Caldwell, and Jeff Rainey provide the technical brainpower behind the cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey\u2019re the ones making the changes and keeping us running,\u201d Wyatt said. \u201cI help a little, but they do the real work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wyatt can be found pushing off cars, lifting cars, and making mechanical adjustments on his and his brother\u2019s cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The closest track is Music City, located in Hermitage, which is where the boys got their start. This season, they chose to race at the Huntsville Quarter Midget Track to be closer to Ernie Tuck, a family friend and the boys\u2019 sponsor and mentor. Between the time these interviews were conducted and the publication of this article, Mr. Ernie passed away on Aug. 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a moment that now feels like fate, that very day Wyatt brought home the checkered flag in one of the cars Ernie had built for him \u2014 a final victory shared between a driver and the mentor who believed in him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His loss is deeply felt \u2014 not just by Wild & Sunny Racing but the entire quarter midget community. To the boys, every lap they turn and every victory they celebrate will carry a piece of his guidance, his craftsmanship, and his unwavering belief in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ernie had been facing major health issues and wanted to spend as much time as possible giving back to young, talented drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHe wanted to spend all of his time pouring into us,\u201d Wyatt said. \u201cSo we made the move to Huntsville this season just for him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Amos agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMr. Ernie is someone I want to thank. And Wyatt. And Papa Jeff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n While both brothers are driven by goals for the future, they\u2019re also driven by gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wyatt\u2019s advice to new racers is to be patient and don\u2019t give up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou\u2019re not going to win right away, but that\u2019s okay. Just have fun,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Amos keeps it simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s fun. You don\u2019t need to win all the time.
