It serves Lincoln, Marshall, and Bedford counties. As a nonprofit, Junior\u2019s House is funded through grants and community support. Before the children leave, they are given the opportunity to choose something from the toy closet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carol, who has been in law enforcement for 34 years, makes frequent visits to Junior\u2019s House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter seeing the low supply of toys they had available, I realized I could honor Mandy\u2019s memory while helping children who have been through unimaginable trauma. It was another way of keeping her memory alive while making a difference. The toys bring the children a moment of joy \u2014 something that is purely for them, reminding them they are cared for and valued.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born on Aug. 18, 1993, Mandy Jean was Carol\u2019s only child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of her lungs collapsed at birth, and she had a seizure. Two hours later, she was transported to Vanderbilt Hospital in the Angel Ambulance. She had another seizure the next morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors told Carol before she took Mandy home three weeks later, \u201cWe don\u2019t know what\u2019s wrong with your daughter. We don\u2019t know if she\u2019ll live six months or a year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, Mandy was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and she died shortly after celebrating her 30th birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/shelbyville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/07\/2-4-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23939\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/shelbyville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/07\/2-4-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/shelbyville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/07\/2-4-980x653.jpg 980w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/shelbyville\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/07\/2-4-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photography by Ashleigh Newnes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMandy\u2019s mind was sharp,\u201d Carol said. \u201cShe was nonverbal, but we had ways to communicate, especially between us. On Dec. 12, 2023, my world was turned upside down. It has been so difficult to live without Mandy. I know she is happy and pain-free in heaven, but I am having a hard time learning to live without her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spring of 2024, Carol\u2019s sister suggested she share her thoughts in the form of poetry. Amber Chapman, who works at the SPD, typed and illustrated each poem before compiling them into book form for Carol to give to her friends and family for Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carol keeps Mandy\u2019s memory alive through sharing her poetry, and in honor of Mandy\u2019s birthday, the community comes together to donate items to restock the toy closet at Junior\u2019s House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first Mandy Jean Toy Drive was held last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carol said, \u201cThe community has been incredible. From sharing the word to donating toys, their support made our first drive a success. It\u2019s a beautiful way to bring people together for a meaningful cause.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second annual Mandy Jean Memorial Toy Drive will be Aug. 11-18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMandy would\u2019ve been 32 on Aug. 18. There will be a large wrapped box in the lobby of the Shelbyville Police Department, where items can be dropped off.
