FOR OVER 35 years, Trena Tucker Cook stood behind the chair. Today, her appointment book is entirely cleared, making time for the most important things in her life\u2014her family.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cook said, \u201cBetween working 50+ hours a week, taking care of Daddy and my 14-year-old, I was exhausted. I can always get the job back, but I can\u2019t get those two back. I am much more rested, have much more patience with everybody, and [I] like people more again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what she said next got his attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a little more riding time.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you mention riding, the sparkle in Coy Tucker\u2019s eyes is brighter than the beams streaming through the sunroom windows. His smile is contagious; their banter feeds off each other with a sense of humor that keeps you on your toes. Tucker has an answer for everything, and it\u2019s usually hilarious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tucker:<\/strong> She\u2019s a good gal.<\/em> She treats me good\u2026<\/em> most of the time (cutting<\/em> his eyes in his daughter\u2019s<\/em> direction, peeking at the<\/em> tv). Whether I know what\u2019s<\/em> on or not, I just wanna<\/em> look at it, and I\u2019d just<\/em> knock her out of the way.<\/em>
Cook:<\/strong> Well, at least you\u2019ve<\/em> got a pretty face to look<\/em> at. (I added \u201cbeautiful\u201d to<\/em> the mix)<\/em>
Tucker:<\/strong> (rolling eyes) She\u2019s<\/em> good-looking, but I don\u2019t<\/em> know about beautiful.<\/em>
Cook:<\/strong> I bet I turn into<\/em> beautiful right before we<\/em> go out that door for a ride.<\/em>
Tucker:<\/strong> Yeah, I guess so.<\/em> You\u2019re a beautiful girl.<\/em> It\u2019s bad that she can hold<\/em> that above my head.<\/em>
Cook:<\/strong> If you don\u2019t do<\/em> right, I won\u2019t take you<\/em> for a ride.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Riding time is his favorite time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cook enjoys getting off the main roads and exploring the beauty found only on the back roads. No ride is long enough for Tucker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wish she had a little more time,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

No longer able to drive, Tucker\u2019s not used to sitting still. When his wife, Betty, was alive, they traveled the country together, missing only Alaska and Hawaii \u201cbecause we couldn\u2019t drive there,\u201d he said. I\u2019ve been through most of Bedford County, but there are places I\u2019ve not been.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So together, they explore the backroads as often as possible. Each has their favorite things to watch for on their rides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tucker likes to look for deer and Sasquatch, but Cook\u2019s list of favorites is longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As he rolled his eyes, Tucker said, \u201cYou know what she likes? Narrow roads with trees over them like a tunnel, and silos. She likes to go to the old cemeteries, and I have to sit in the car while she walks through them, looking at the tombstones for people she might know. Trena loves old abandoned houses and old churches, old barns, and old farm equipment. And turtles on the road. She [doesn\u2019t] want [them] to get run over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cook documents their rides with photographs of roadside treasures and shares snippets of conversations on her Facebook page. Many people enjoy riding the backroads with them, but there\u2019s more to it than scenic photos and good laughs. Cook has chosen to approach these days with her daddy with heart and humor, refusing to let dementia dictate their days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today as Daddy and I went to Farmington to Newcombe<\/em> Family Farm to get some beautiful and delicious sourdough<\/em> bread that came from Oh Peas Farm, we saw a campaign<\/em> sign to please vote for someone with the name \u201cPoarch.\u201d<\/em>
Daddy:<\/strong> Poarch, humm; I\u2019m not sure I would want that last<\/em> name. I\u2019m afraid people would just walk all over me.<\/em>

Daddy<\/strong> (getting up from the breakfast table): I better do my<\/em> exercises so that warden Terri don\u2019t find out that I haven\u2019t<\/em> done them.<\/em>
Me: <\/strong>That would be a good idea.<\/em>
Daddy:<\/strong> I\u2019d hate to go to solitary confinement.<\/em>

Conversation with Daddy as we are leaving out for our ride:<\/strong><\/em>
Me:<\/strong> Let me fix this towel over those vents, so you don\u2019t get<\/em> too cold.<\/em>
Daddy: <\/strong>Hey, you need to pull it down over here just a little bit.<\/em>
Me:<\/strong> Look, mister, I think you can take your little hand and<\/em> pull that over yourself (As I do it). Just like I told you earlier\u2014<\/em> you could not do without all the women in your life.<\/em>
Daddy:<\/strong> Well, I don\u2019t know about that, missy. I can do without<\/em> the women; I just need my daughters.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Tucker learned early to mind the women in his life. Cook\u2019s sister, Belinda, lives in Bowling Green, and their brother, Brad, lives in Shelbyville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of his wife, Betty, Cook\u2019s stepmother, he said, \u201cShe was in my same class; a valedictorian. She was smart and very picky, too,\u201d he laughs. \u201cSo I had to mind her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tucker has always been a busy man. Retired from Jostens, many will know him from his passion for bowling. His 300- game ring reminds him daily of the special milestone, and on his other hand is his ring from Jostens. He enjoyed working with wood and is surrounded by many of his creations and collections. Like him, their sense of humor and heart resonates throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caregivers allow Cook time to be more present in all of life\u2019s moments with her family and friends. In addition to her middle school-aged son, Cook has an adult son and daughter-in-law and recognizes now more than ever the value of family over stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can replace all this,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t want to live with regrets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The love is tangible in their time and space together. Whether sharing it in person or online, it brightens the days of others and encourages us all to be more present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
