A 30-year-deep friendship doesn\u2019t happen by magic, however. \u201cIt takes work to truly invest in someone\u2019s life,\u201d said Olive, \u201cAnd a great deal of trust that the other person will show up for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen I had twins\u2026 my world was put into the blender,\u201d Olive said. \u201cIt was overwhelming, and Gigi was a person who\u2014they jumped in the deep end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou show up,\u201d Robison said, \u201ceven when all you can do is sit with the other person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGood or bad\u2014you wanted to be there for the good things but also, you know, somebody that you knew would be there for the bad things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Olive and Robison truly do show up for each other as mutual emergency contacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201c<\/em>Our husbands are busy, and half the time they don\u2019t answer their phones,\u201d Robison said. \u201cI know if I really need somebody to come, then I want them to call Cherie because she\u2019s going to answer her phone; she\u2019s going to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another significant factor in their continued friendship has been their faith. Not only do they have shared goals and principles, but it also provides an avenue for them to work together. Olive and Robison served together for some time at King\u2019s Cross Church as the youth minister and small group leader and attributed a good deal of their continued friendship to those mentors they had in church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey really modeled… what it was like to say\u2014you know\u2014\u2019I\u2019m here for you. I want to be part of your life,\u2019\u201d Robison said. \u201cI want to be a part of your family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n That style of friendship has become an example for their children as well, who Robison said looked for a similar kind of friend after they moved back to Tullahoma after college.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThey have found some of those through their small group at church,\u201d Robison said. \u201cThey realized the value of having close friends that you could count on\u2014that you wanted to do life with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 30 years of friendship doesn\u2019t end with just the women, either. Both husbands are fast friends, and their children consider themselves near siblings\u2014part of the combined family of the Robisons. When Olive\u2019s son was getting married, he and Olive asked Robison to share in the mother-son dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOne of the sweetest things, really, that anybody\u2019s ever done for me,\u201d Robison said. \u201cI think things like that make a friendship last\u2014like just caring about the other person.\u201dDespite how close the two families are, they are not exclusive\u2014something Robison said was crucial in maintaining a friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe have a lot of friends. We have some friends in common, and we have some friends not in common,\u201d Robison said. \u201cIt\u2019s never been that kind of a thing like, \u2018Oh, you can\u2019t do something with somebody else.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Olive stated that in the end, however, a friendship like the Robisons is so desirable because it makes life enjoyable\u2014not just on big trips or vacations, but in small, everyday events with people you enjoy spending time with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou have to give up your personal time,\u201d Robison said, \u201cbut also\u2026 we have a lot of fun.\u201d GN<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" A 30-year-deep friendship doesn\u2019t happen by magic.
