All year, the nonprofit works to honor the area\u2019s heritage and celebrate the individuals who have contributed to its rich history. Now, they\u2019re trying to create a new Tullahoma holiday tradition with the annual Flip the Switch tree-lighting ceremony.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYears ago, they used to do an Olde Towne Stroll, and they would stop at different businesses and sing Christmas carols,\u201d Tullahoma Community Foundation member and local realtor Lynda Welty said. \u201cAnd we\u2019ve gotten away from that, so we just kind of want to bring back some of that nostalgia.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standing in what\u2019s now known as History Park, or Caboose Park, is a tree dedicated to the memory of former Tullahoma Mayor George Orr.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, a lighting ceremony was held at the park, where the city lit up a huge evergreen tree on North Atlantic Street. But eventually, the evergreen died. When Orr passed away in 2012, his wife helped the Tullahoma Community Foundation raise funds to plant a large Norway spruce as a memorial tree and a way to restore the holiday spirit of History Park.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/tullahoma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/11\/2-4-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20949\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/tullahoma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/11\/2-4-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/tullahoma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/11\/2-4-980x653.png 980w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/tullahoma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/11\/2-4-480x320.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Welty decided instead of putting on another poorly attended ceremony, they could try to create a Hallmark-style event. They got Mrs. Claus to come out and help kids write letters to Santa. Local vendors participated and gave out samples. Kids got to enter their names in a drawing to \u201cflip the switch\u201d and turn on the Christmas lights at dusk. The event was free to attend, with vendors selling some local goods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLast year was our first year, and we really liked what we did,\u201d she said. \u201cWe thought, okay, now we\u2019ll have to build on this.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, for the second annual Flip the Switch, the Tullahoma Community Foundation is still hosting vendors, and Mrs. Claus still plans to help kids write their Christmas lists. They\u2019re also bringing in a petting zoo, food trucks, more vendors, and a porta-potty (a necessary evil they learned after last year).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMrs. Claus comes in on an old firetruck and gathers the letters. She then takes the letters back to Santa \u2014 because Santa\u2019s way too busy,\u201d Welty said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/tullahoma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/11\/1-4-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/tullahoma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/11\/1-4-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/tullahoma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/11\/1-4-980x653.png 980w, https:\/\/goodnewsmags.com\/tullahoma\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/11\/1-4-480x320.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The event isn\u2019t stealing any thunder from the Tullahoma Christmas Parade, where Santa makes his annual appearance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat way, it doesn\u2019t interfere. We\u2019re not trying to compete; we\u2019re just trying to add to,\u201d Welty said of the community Christmas festivities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flip the Switch will be held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., with the lighting taking place at dusk, around 4 to 4:30 p.m. Like last year, the event will be free to attend, but the nonprofit encourages and accepts donations.
