SERVING HIS COUNTRY \u201cYou couldn\u2019t beat it,\u201d he said. \u201cA guy like me, I just loved everything it had to offer; the physical challenges, the mental toughness. I was right where I needed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n After eight years of active service, Tucker decided to return closer to home and joined the National Guard. While the experience was meaningful, he said it didn\u2019t carry the same intensity or rhythm he had grown accustomed to. However, he served proudly for five years before deciding it was time for a new adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ANSWERING A NEW CALL \u201cThe fire department is the closest thing to the military,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe camaraderie, the call to duty, the chance to help others all felt so familiar. After I left active duty, I was working a job that left me unhappy, but once I joined the department, I knew I was where I needed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tucker added that his path into firefighting wasn\u2019t traditional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI was hired off the streets,\u201d Tucker said. \u201cAt the time, the department had volunteer firefighters who would pick up shifts when needed. I ended up surpassing those volunteers in training and skill, and that opened the door to being hired on full-time. That brought me back into a world of training, purpose, and structure \u2014 the things I had missed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tucker officially joined the department in 2015. Nearly 10 years later, he serves as a lieutenant, a position he takes pride in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n FINDING PURPOSE AS A FIRST RESPONDER \u201cI can\u2019t ever see myself doing anything else,\u201d he said. \u201cI did leave for about a year, but I was miserable. I came back to the fire department, and I haven\u2019t looked back. I love the job, especially the people I work with. These guys are the best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n For Tucker, firefighting is about more than answering calls. It\u2019s about showing up for people in their darkest hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou get called to somebody\u2019s worst day,\u201d he said. \u201cIt can be anything, from a medical emergency to keeping their house from burning down. You\u2019re there to help them through it. That\u2019s what makes the job so meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Equally important to him are the bonds built within the department. The comradeship among firefighters mirrors what he loved most about the military: trust, teamwork, and brotherhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A CONNECTION TO COMMUNITY \u201cIt\u2019s more than just winning,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s about everyone working together toward the same goal. That\u2019s what I try to teach my son and his teammates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Though many in the community view firefighters as heroes, Tucker humbly rejects the label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI don\u2019t see myself as a hero,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m just doing my job. There are a lot of guys in our department who are heroes. For me, it\u2019s just about trying to do the right thing and helping people on their worst days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Still, he acknowledges the pride that comes with wearing the uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPutting the uniform on every day; it\u2019s not something you can just sign up for and walk away from,\u201d said Tucker. \u201cYou\u2019re committed. It wears on you at times, sure, but it\u2019s a badge of honor. It represents where you come from and who you stand for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n LEADING BY EXAMPLE \u201cI\u2019ve had great leaders who taught me to lead by example. They weren\u2019t big talkers. They just showed up, day in and day out, and did the right thing,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the kind of leader I try to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n For the future, Tucker, along with brothers of the badge, works each day to keep Tullahoma safe. Tucker added that he says this cherished bible verse from the book of Isaiah each time he goes out on call, a reminder that it is his duty to be there for those in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThen I heard the voice of the Lord saying, \u2018Whom shall I send, and who will go for\u2026us?
