PAULETTE BENNETT submerged herself in a world of colors, textures, and endless possibilities. Her hands, full of untapped potential, danced across a plethora of notions and other materials, transforming them into something beautiful. As she worked, she couldn’t help but reflect on how this simple act of crafting had become such an important part of her life.
Crafting offered Bennett a source of purpose after she retired from her career due to medical reasons. It was a confusing and difficult experience, but it was also a challenge that helped her become more resourceful and strategic. Each project — like the details of a hand-painted vase, delicate plate flowers, and the sturdy construction of a wooden birdhouse — revealed her endless creative abilities and unveiled new dimensions of creativity.
“It started as a hobby with repurposing items like bottles into bird feeders and wind chimes and has grown into a full-fledged passion. I love exploring various media and continually challenging myself to create new and unique crafts,” she said.
“Over time, I have expanded my crafting repertoire to include items made from flower pots, epoxy coasters and tumblers, 3D pictures using cardstock, string painting, plate flowers, and teacup bird feeders that cater to butterflies and hummingbirds.”
Bennett embraces the challenge of crafting on a shoestring budget because it helps her keep her price points reasonable for customers.
One project stood out in Bennett’s mind. It was a small wooden box carved with intricate patterns. She made it as a gift for a friend who was going through a difficult time. When she presented it to her friend, her eyes filled with tears, and she told Bennett that it was the most beautiful and meaningful gift she had ever received. That moment, for Bennett, reaffirmed the healing power of handmade creations and the impact they could have on people’s lives.
Crafting also introduced Bennett to a wonderful community of like-minded members. At Foothills Crafts and Gift Shop, she finally found a place where she could share her work with the community and learn from other crafters’ expertise.
Foothills Crafts is a local gem where you can find unique, handmade products. It’s a nonprofit that supports local artisans and offers classes. When you shop with Foothills Crafts, you’re also supporting our community and helping to preserve local crafts.
Bennett joined Foothills Crafts in October 2022, and in October 2023, she became a member of the board as vice president.
Together, the crafters work on community projects, such as crafting embroidered items for children and walker bags for nursing home residents. Recently, the Foothills Crafts community rallied to provide comfort to victims of the Caden Estates apartment fire. They quickly organized a quilt sew-in, producing a generous supply of warm and cozy quilts for local police officers to distribute to the fire victims. The police department was so impressed by the generosity of the crafters that they requested additional quilts to keep on hand for future emergencies.
“The best part of our community projects is knowing that we are making a positive difference in someone’s life,” she said.
Over time, Bennett has learned new techniques, materials, and inspirations, such as sewing, woodworking, and upcycling. Exploring new ideas has taught her patience, perseverance, and joy in the small things.
Bennett said community projects enhanced her teamwork and problem-solving skills.
“Participating in community projects has been a truly rewarding journey. Engaging with individuals — each with their own unique stories and viewpoints — has expanded my global perspective and deepened my compassion for others.”
She continued, “These projects have enhanced my teamwork and problem-solving abilities as we’ve encountered and overcome various obstacles to reach our objectives.”
She looks to nature as her muse, along with craft stores, online exploration, partnerships, and craft events, asserting that “creativity thrives on diverse influences.”
With her husband, she crafts personalized wooden blocks as heartfelt tributes. Each block is carefully made to capture the essence of a loved one and brings comfort and light as special keepsakes. The demand for these unique mementos grows during the holiday season, and they bring those who have lost loved ones the peace they need.
Aside from the personal satisfaction of creating something beautiful, crafting has also enhanced Bennett’s mental health. For her and many other crafters, it is a form of therapy and a way to relax and de-stress. The repetitive motions of knitting or sewing can be incredibly calming, and the focus required to complete a project can help clear the mind.
In the future, Bennett is excited to continue exploring crafting, learning new techniques, and creating pieces that bring joy and beauty to the world. She plans to continue supporting the crafting community and encouraging others to find joy in creating with their own hands.
Crafting has been a powerful experience for Bennett, and she is grateful for the opportunities it has provided.
