Cynthia Young: Guided by faith, leading with purpose

by | Apr 2026

FOR OVER three decades, Cynthia Young has dedicated her life to education at Cowan Elementary School, a place she describes as her second home. While teaching was not her original career plan, Young’s journey into the classroom reflects a calling she believes was divinely orchestrated.

After seven years as a teaching assistant at Huntland School, she was encouraged by colleagues and mentors to pursue a degree in education. Young’s student teaching at Cowan Elementary provided the perfect launchpad for a career spanning more than 30 years.

“I consider myself a late bloomer,” Young shared, “But I firmly believe God’s grace directs us exactly where we need to be, in His timing. Every challenge and season has prepared me for leadership.”

This perspective shapes her approach to education, blending patience, resilience, and intentionality with a deep trust in God’s guidance. Over the years, she has seen firsthand the profound impact a supportive, caring school environment can have on children and the chain reaction it creates throughout the community.

Now serving as principal of Cowan Elementary, Young views her role as much more than administrative oversight; it is a calling to foster a culture of care, respect, and excellence.

“My primary responsibility is to create an environment where every individual feels seen, safe, and valued long before they even step through our doors,” she explained.

This philosophy extends beyond students to faculty and staff. By ensuring that teachers and support staff feel appreciated and empowered, she believes they can, in turn, deliver their best work and positively impact every student’s learning experience.

Young’s dedication has been affirmed in countless ways over the years. One particularly meaningful moment came when a former student, now an accomplished educator herself, credited Young as the inspiration for pursuing a career in teaching.

“Hearing from her, and from many other former students who entered education, confirms that I am exactly where I am meant to be,” Young reflected. “Knowing I’ve played a part in shaping future educators reminds me why this work matters. It is through these relationships that I can influence the future of our community, one student and one future teacher at a time.”

A central component of Young’s leadership is creating a school culture that challenges students academically while making them feel valued and supported. At Cowan Elementary, students are guided to handle conflicts with kindness, embrace mistakes as opportunities to grow, and strive for excellence no matter their background. Teachers work collaboratively to ensure that every child has access to the resources and emotional support needed to thrive. In this environment, learning extends beyond the classroom, becoming a transformative experience that builds confidence and character.

Young attributes much of her effectiveness to her belief in the importance of balance and perspective, lessons she has learned not only in education but in life.

“No two days are the same, and laughter is the best way to handle the unexpected,” she said.

Her family serves as a faithful source of support through life’s challenges, while the honest guidance of a trusted friend helps keep her grounded. Together, they reinforce her lifelong philosophy: trust in God, prioritize family, stay self-aware, and embrace life as an adventure.

Despite the increasing demands and pressures educators face today, Young remains motivated and hopeful. Each morning, during her commute to work, she reflects on her students and brainstorms new ways to ignite their curiosity. The “aha” moments in the classroom, when a concept clicks or a child experiences the joy of discovery, serve as powerful reminders that education is far more than a profession; it is an opportunity to shape lives and futures.

Looking toward the legacy she hopes to leave at Cowan Elementary, Young emphasizes purpose over accolades.

“When you lead with the perspective that God has a plan for every person, you transform school from a place of work into a place of purpose,” she explained.

Her greatest aspiration is that students leave Cowan Elementary not only academically prepared, but confident in their abilities and empowered to pursue their full potential. Long after they have left, she hopes they remember the love, support, and encouragement they experienced within the school’s walls. The school motto, “Together We Can,” emphasizes that through collaboration, care, and commitment, the community can truly make a difference.

Young’s career exemplifies the transformative power of leadership rooted in faith, empathy, and dedication. Under her guidance, Cowan Elementary is a thriving community where students are nurtured, educators are empowered, and growth is celebrated. Her commitment to both academic excellence and personal development ensures that each student is not only prepared for the challenges of learning but also equipped with the confidence and resilience to succeed beyond the classroom.

Over decades of service, Cynthia Young has demonstrated that effective education extends far beyond academics. By fostering a culture of care, purpose, and collaboration, she has inspired both students and staff to reach their fullest potential. Her leadership has shaped generations of learners and educators alike, leaving a meaningful and enduring impact on Cowan Elementary and the wider community it serves. Through her vision and willingness to serve, the school continues to thrive as a place of growth, inspiration, and lasting influence. GN
