THERE WAS a time in our history when farm-to-table was a daily affair. Back then, families gathered around the table to enjoy hot chicken, biscuits, corn, and fresh apple pies. Neighbors would swap homemade butter for juicy tomatoes while children gleefully chased fireflies as their grandpas dutifully tended to their cattle. The square itself was a booming marketplace where community farmers and business owners exchanged smiles and resources with one another. Those were the days when members of the community shared genuine connections and meals at the table. Today, as we strive to reconnect with the roots of our heritage, we see a growing movement toward embracing those valuable farm-to-table principles, building sincere connections, and celebrating the bounty of our local land.
The Winchester Downtown Program captures that nostalgic small-town vibe we cherish. Each fall, the square comes alive with the annual Winchester Farm-to- Table event, celebrating the freshest ingredients grown and produced within a 30-mile radius.
Traditionally held on a single Saturday in late September, Farm-to-Table offers a chance to indulge in a multi-course meal prepared by a local chef. Last year, chef Jim Filaroski from Filo’s Tavern delighted the community with a menu featuring the season’s finest ingredients. Guests experienced a farm-to-table event unlike any other, with place settings informing attendees of each ingredient’s origin. Guests enjoyed delicious cocktails thanks to Nearest Green Distillery, which perfectly complements the farm-fresh dishes.
The event brought the community together with its delectable food, delightful drinks, and engaging activities. The silent auction offered unique items, and the historic setting provided the perfect space for making new memories with friends and neighbors.
The event’s intimate atmosphere makes it a truly remarkable experience. The evening begins with a social hour, allowing attendees to mingle with neighbors and fellow food lovers over cocktails made from local distilleries. The distillers select drinks that perfectly complement the upcoming meal. The melodies of a local acoustic musician enhance the ambiance as the warm Edison lights string overhead.
“You get to mingle with the chef and the people that are serving,” said Beth Rhoton with the Winchester Downtown Program. “Sometimes we have student council from one of the high schools come, but we’ve had other ones in the past come in and help serve.”
At Farm-to-Table, you’ll also get a glimpse into the soul of the Winchester community. Local business owners and vendors share their handcrafted products, from stunning jewelry to gorgeous paintings that capture unique Tennessee landscapes. This provides an excellent opportunity for attendees to discover hidden gems and support homegrown talent.
“One year, we had a lady that made jewelry out of copper,” said Rhoton. “Weaver Farms is a local farm that sells their meat there.”
Farm-to-Table is incredibly anticipated, with tickets typically selling out within a few days.
Rhoton said, “Generally, the tickets sell out in a few days because there’s such a high demand for them. We only have 100 tickets, so they’re very sought after. It’s just a good evening out.”
Farm-to-Table has once again delivered an amazing live auction this year, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event. The proceeds from the auction benefit the Winchester Downtown Program’s ‘Tis the Season event, allowing the spirit of giving to spread well beyond the Farm-to-Table experience.
While the times may have changed, the desire for genuine connection and fresh, locally grown products remains. The Winchester Downtown Farm-to-Table event is another chance for the community to reconnect with our roots, support local farmers and artisans, and create new memories in our hometown. It’s a celebration of local bounty and reminds us why Winchester is so special. Look out for next year’s event and be among the first to purchase a ticket. You won’t regret experiencing the taste of community in Winchester. GN
