GRACE CENTER of Hope, a nonprofit founded by visionary Dr. Ashley Dewitt, welcomes the laughter and dreams of children seeking a safe place for after-school activities. The community center bustles with boisterous energy. Inside, rooms radiate with delight. Laughter erupts in bursts as children huddle, some playing interactive games while others lose themselves in the joyful chaos of the craft station. On the walls, a colorful mosaic of handmade trinkets tells of past adventures, each creation a silent promise that anything is possible within these walls.
Kathy Duvenage’s journey with Grace Center of Hope began in 2018, a year that marked the initiation of her family’s involvement in this life-changing organization. They immersed themselves in the mission of Grace Center of Hope, drawn by a desire to uplift the children of our community. Their commitment to this cause mirrors the dedication of those who envisioned this shelter for the vulnerable.
Grace Center of Hope volunteers supervise activities during after-school programs and day camps. The heartbeat of this organization lies in the formative, long-term relationships formed between volunteers and children. Young people from all walks of life find their voices, hone their talents, and step into leadership roles.
Volunteers patiently guide children in their reading, doubling as their mentor when needed, celebrating their small victories as they navigate activities encouraging self-expression and teamwork. A puppet show becomes a stage for shy voices to find strength, and skits serve as a canvas for newfound confidence.

The lack of confidence is a recurring obstacle for the students and volunteers. To combat this, the organization provides a nurturing environment where children inherit life skills, and building confidence becomes a stepping stone to unlocking their full potential.
“Because we have a very kind, loving, encouraging environment, we encourage children to step out of their comfort zone and try things they feel they can’t do. And because it’s a positive, encouraging environment, they get to succeed, do it again, and get better at it. And so it’s kind of a safe environment to become more confident in themselves, and who they are, and what they can do,” explained Duvenage.
The challenging experience of some children creates stubborn barriers to confidence. Grace Center of Hope, however, symbolizes a lighthouse in the storm, guiding the children toward a sense of self-worth and purpose.
Amidst adversity, the faith-based approach of Grace Center of Hope propels them forward. The message of God’s love and the affirmation of each child’s inherent value create a foundation for growth. Stories of transformation are commonplace, like that of a young girl from a struggling family who found solace and purpose within the walls of Grace Center of Hope. Her journey from a hurting child to a confident helper illustrates the profound impact of faith and love.

“She became a group helper and helps with some of the things we do. She talked about how Grace Center had helped her learn about God and helped her in difficult times, and now she wants to help others learn about God. Whereas when she first came, she was hurting a lot.”
The organization’s core lies in its year-round after-school programs, conducted twice a week during school semesters. In these sessions, volunteers engage in education, inspiration, and recreation.
A typical day encompasses educational activities, providing homework assistance, and promoting a love for learning. The sessions transition into a vibrant assembly, where biblical teachings intertwine with music, drama, and interactive lessons, creating an environment where spirituality and education converge.
Formative team challenges and physical activities each contribute to the holistic development of the children. Home-cooked meals, shared and made with love, nourish their bodies and reinforce spiritual unity and belonging.
“The biggest thing that we really are pouring into the children is love and the message that they are valued and very valuable. It’s very much a place where children learn to be loved and show love to one another — kindness, respect, good manners, and just things all to do with valuing one another.”
For those inspired to join this noble cause, help is more than welcome. Every helping hand contributes to the nurturing of hearts and the transformation of lives. GN
