THERE’S A new restaurant on U.S. 64, near Interstate Highway 65. Like most locals, when I hear about a new restaurant opening, I can’t wait to try it. In a small town, it gives everyone something to look forward to.
One evening in December, I stopped to get a bite to eat. It had been a busy day with no breakfast or lunch, so, being overly dramatic, I was “starving.” Perhaps, even a little “hangry.” Unknowingly, I had entered a holiday wonderland with white Christmas trees, lights, and polar bears. It was picturesque, to say the least.
The hostess had a delightful smile. She showed me to the booth where I would sit and enjoy one of the best mushroom Swiss burgers and fries I had ever eaten, and I have tried many over the years. Hands down, this one was the best! I liked it so much that the following evening, my husband and I went back.
One thing we both have in common is that we are “foodies,” so I knew he would enjoy it as much as I did. He had the smothered chicken on a bed of rice, with a baked potato, side salad, and Texas toast. When this man says “MMM,” that means something! The food was delicious, and he enjoyed every morsel. I had the mushroom Swiss burger with fries again because it was so delicious the evening before. We both had to get to-go boxes for our leftovers because you get such an ample amount of food. He was impressed with his meal and enjoyed the baseball-themed area we were sitting in. Junction 64 received both of our A-plus approvals!
My most recent visit was with a friend and her two sons. I was excited for them to try this incredible new restaurant. I had plans afterward to interview the owner, Mildred McNatt. I wanted to meet the woman behind the successful restaurants she’s owned over the years around Fayetteville, Ardmore, and Lewisburg.
When you first meet Mildred, she greets you with a genuine, kind smile and a twinkle in her eyes. She makes you feel at home with her warm hospitality and charming demeanor. She is the kind of person everyone enjoys being around, perfect for the line of business she’s in.
From bussing tables at 12 years old to owning 11 restaurants throughout her life, Mildred has done it all. She plans to add a buffet to the restaurant that will include meats and vegetables prepared just the way she’s always done it — deliciously cooked using her recipes, loved by many over the years. GN
