GOOD NEWS IS COMING TO DINNER! We will feature a local food critic’s thoughts as they dine in Manchester. This month, Shannon Beebe visited The Donut Shoppe.
THERE’S SOMETHING special about a hometown doughnut shop — the kind of place where the smell of warm dough and sweet glaze hits you before you even reach the door. For me, those moments run a little deeper. When I was a child, a fond memory I had was going to a local doughnut shop to pick out my favorite Sunday morning treat with my dad. It was simple, it was sweet, and it was ours.
Today, I was out and about early on a quiet Sunday and decided to stop by The Donut Shoppe in Winchester. Little did I know I was about to be taken right back to those childhood mornings. The moment I walked in, I was greeted with that unmistakable aroma — comforting, warm, and full of nostalgia. The cases were filled with classics, new twists, and everything in between, making it nearly impossible to pick just one. So, naturally, I didn’t.

I ordered a half dozen, choosing a variety so I could taste my way through the experience. From the cinnamon twist to the Bavarian cream, each bite was another memory flowing through my mouth. The cinnamon twist was light and airy, with just the right balance of sweetness and spice — exactly what a classic twist should be. The Bavarian cream was rich without being heavy, and the filling tasted homemade, smooth, and perfectly tucked into a soft, pillowy dough.
But what truly stood out was the unmistakable “local love” baked into every doughnut. Nothing felt mass-produced or overly processed. Everything tasted fresh, made that morning, and crafted with care. Even the simple glazed doughnut — often the true test of a good shop — was soft, melt-in-your-mouth perfection.

The Donut Shoppe isn’t flashy. It doesn’t need gimmicks or trends. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why small-town staples matter — because they bring people together, they spark old memories, and they create new ones.
Whether you’re grabbing a quick treat or reliving a cherished Sunday morning tradition, The Donut Shoppe in Winchester is absolutely worth the stop. GN
