GOOD NEWS IS COMING TO DINNER! We will feature a local food critic’s thoughts as they dine in Tullahoma. This month, Tabitha Buckner visited Backroad Brew.
TULLAHOMA HAS a way of hiding its best spots just off the beaten path, and Backroad Brew is proof of that. This cozy drive-thru cafe doesn’t need neon signs or big-city buzz. It wins you over with charm and creativity. The best part is that while they serve up the classics like Americanos, lattes, and chai, it is their seasonal favorites and locally themed flair that keep everyone coming back for more!
Let’s start with my recent trip, right in the middle of fall. First up was The Carrie, an iced espresso with white mocha and strawberry. I’ll admit, I hesitated at first. Strawberry and coffee? But one sip in and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s creamy, slightly sweet, and somehow both comforting and bright. The kind of drink that makes you do a little happy sigh after the first sip.

Then there’s the Caramel Apple Butter Latte, served iced or hot and tasting exactly like fall decided to take a coffee break. It’s buttery, smooth, and just spiced enough to feel cozy without crossing into “holiday candle” territory.
And for something on the lighter side, the Cranberry Orange Lotus Refresher is a zesty little number that perks you up without the sugar crash — tart, crisp, and downright cheerful. And the flavor options and combinations on all of their drinks are endless!
Even the snacks show care and balance. The fruit and yogurt parfait, layered with topping of your choice — we went with strawberries, bananas, and a drizzle of honey — feels like a breakfast that actually loves you back. It’s simple, fresh, and perfectly fits the cafe’s easygoing vibe. But next time I have my eye on the fruit nachos or an acai bowl! Both sound refreshingly fun, and both are customizable.

But what really sets Backroad Brew apart isn’t just the drinks. It’s the people and the location. The staff greet you like an old friend, even if it’s your first time at the window. It’s far enough out of town to feel like you’re on a refreshing drive through the country. And there’s no rush, no pressure. Just that small-town warmth that makes you want to linger a little longer.
In true Tullahoma fashion, the best things aren’t always front and center. Backroad Brew is one of those hidden gems worth finding — creative, cozy, and just the right amount of unexpected. GN
