ROLLS OF thunder boomed overhead as we quickly finished the grocery shopping and raced to the checkout. Hurrying out under dark skies, we were pummeled with hard, blinding rain that pushed my contacts under my eyelids, leaving me unable to see clearly. My daughter, Ashley, only five at the time, jumped into action, guiding the shopping cart and me through parking lot traffic that never once stopped to let us cross. Finally reaching the car, I tossed my daughter and groceries in, leaving the cart to fend for itself. We were two drenched rats!
Handing me her treasured cloth diaper to wipe my face, I retrieved my contacts and turned on the car to defog the windows and warm our soaked bodies. Hail and strong winds shook the car as Ashley trembled in fear. As calmly as I could, I prayed aloud for God to watch over us and keep us safe. I could feel her heart racing under my hand and prayed aloud again, this time asking God to calm her fears and still the storm. Her heartbeat began to slow. The storm began to slow. God had answered our prayers.
The skies cleared as we made our way home where a breathtaking double rainbow awaited us. God answered our prayers and reminded us of His promises and His love.
Life’s storms come quickly and often without warning, but the nearness of God and His love is a certainty. The rainbow is a beautiful reminder of His faithfulness: the symbol of His covenant promise never to destroy all of life on earth again by flood. He loves to hear from us on sunny days and in the storms, and He longs to reveal more of His character to us through His Word. Don’t wait for a storm to talk with Him today! -GN
