Looking around the garage, under the kitchen sink, or inside the bathroom cabinet, and chances are, there’s old household cleaners, leftover lawn chemicals, or expired medicines taking up space. Clearing out these items can feel tricky because tossing them in the daily trash or pouring them down the drain can spark dangerous fires, pollute soil, and harm local drinking water.
Fortunately, local residents have a simple, free way to safely clear out the clutter. Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 3, 2026. From 8:00 a.m. until noon, the Bedford County Highway Department will host the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event at the Agriculture Center at 2119 Midland Road in Shelbyville.
Sponsored by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, in partnership with Bedford County Solid Waste, this event provides neighbors with a convenient spot to drop off unwanted materials. You can bring items like drain openers, pool chemicals, fertilizer, fuel additives, aerosol cans, and even old fluorescent light bulbs.
Keep in mind that paint will not be accepted at this event. However, you can drop off latex and oil-based paint year-round at the Shelbyville Transfer Station. Used motor oil and car batteries are also accepted daily at all county convenience centers.
This service is strictly for household items. Businesses, farms, and schools need to call ahead to schedule a special appointment for waste removal. Gather up those unwanted chemicals and help keep our community clean, safe, and green.
