THE ANNUAL Fall Heritage Festival brings together communities from across the region for a weekend celebration in downtown Cowan. Held on Tennessee Avenue and Front Street on either side of the railroad tracks, the festival serves as the primary fundraiser for the Cowan Railroad Museum.
“This is not just a Cowan thing or a Franklin County thing. This is an area-wide event,” said Mark Ledbetter, chairman of the Fall Heritage Festival committee and past president of the Cowan Railroad Museum.
The festival is held on the third weekend of September, and it draws people from all over Tennessee and bordering states. It provides a family-friendly atmosphere with craft vendors, live music, and activities. This year’s event welcomed 174 vendor booths from at least six different states.

The three-day celebration featured live concerts on three stages, with the headliner band Exile. Musical acts were
primarily bluegrass, gospel, or rock, reflecting the heritage of the Cumberland Plateau foothills.
Attendees also enjoyed shopping at the booths, eating from food trucks, and exploring the train museum. There were also antique engines on display and a Saturday Jeep parade.
There were plenty of kids’ activities for families, including a carousel and games. The cherry on top was the beautiful fireworks display that concluded the event on Friday and Saturday nights. The festival is a tradition that seeks to provide memories and teach each new generation about this area’s history and culture.

“When you think about heritage, you have to remember we are creating heritage every day as we go forward,” Ledbetter said.
Free admission and parking made the event easily accessible, a gift provided by regional businesses and individuals.
“Just like the railroads being built through here opened this area up to the world, hopefully, we bring something to this festival that will be new for people to experience,” Ledbetter said.

Next year’s Fall Heritage Festival is already in the works, and locals are encouraged to attend.
“Bring a wagon and do your Christmas shopping,” Ledbetter said. GN
