GOOD NEWS IS COMING TO DINNER! We will feature a local food critic’s thoughts as they dine in Franklin County. This month, Shannon Beebe visited Swiss Pantry.
WHEN YOU leave Winchester and head toward Huntland, it doesn’t take long before the road carries you into an even smaller town called Belvidere. It’s the kind of place you might pass through without thinking twice — unless you know what’s waiting just off Highway 64. Today, we decided to make a stop at a beloved local landmark — the Swiss Pantry. For the past 35 years, this unassuming storefront has been a staple of the community, best known for its famous Saturday doughnuts, offered on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

Although we didn’t time our visit for “doughnut day,” we did stop to try their lunch sandwiches. Walking through the door feels a bit like stepping into a country kitchen and general store rolled into one. Shelves are lined with baking supplies, cooking ingredients, and specialty items you can take home to prepare yourself. It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down and look around.
We went with the chicken salad sandwich and the chicken bacon ranch, both served with chips. While waiting for our food, I couldn’t stop eyeing the fresh fudge, and of course, I ended up grabbing some along with homemade fried pies (chocolate and peach). Once I got them home and reheated, they were next-level good.

When our order was ready, we chose to sit inside at the dining room table. The space felt quaint, cozy, and relaxed — an easy spot to slow down and enjoy a good meal.
The chicken salad sandwich was served on homemade toasted sourdough bread and layered with their house-made chicken salad, lettuce, and tomato. It was delicious — perfectly crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The chicken bacon ranch featured large garlic chicken strips, crispy bacon, havarti cheese, homemade ranch, lettuce, and tomato. We ordered it grilled (you can also get it cold), and it came out toasted just right. It was just as flavorful and satisfying as the chicken salad.

Swiss Pantry proved once again why it remains a treasured stop for locals and visitors alike. GN
