FOR THE last 17 years, Tristan Eicher has looked up to his dad, Norman, who owns Mountain View on David Crockett Highway in Belvidere. Though the business has expanded to seven locations in Tennessee and North Alabama, when it comes to teaching his sons, Norman is never too busy.
“My approach has always been hands-on and intentional,” Norman said. “I involve them directly, not just to show them how to do something, but why we do it that way. It’s about helping them understand what works, what doesn’t, and the principles behind the craftsmanship. That ‘why’ is where the values live — in quality, integrity, and purpose.”
“Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” is a motto familiar to Tristan. To him, these are more than just words.
“This isn’t something my dad has told me, but something I’ve observed. Ever since I can remember, I’ve watched him and wanted to be like him. He has shown me that building stuff is something to take pride in. I think what we build is necessary in our community, and I feel it brings people together,” Tristan said.
Norman added, “It means a great deal to me to see both of my sons taking an active interest in what we’ve built here at Mountain View. Watching them grow into the work — willing to do anything from sweeping floors to managing deliveries and installations — brings a sense of pride and continuity. They’re learning not just a trade, but a way of life rooted in responsibility and contribution.”
From small projects like dog houses, mini barns, carports, and pavilions, to custom storefronts, commercial buildings, and full-size warehouses, to single-family dwellings such as the widely popular barndominium, Mountain View builds it all. They proudly offer exceptional service, quality materials backed by a two-year guarantee, and delivery.

“There’s been a noticeable exodus of experienced tradesmen, and far too few stepping in to fill this gap,” Norman said. “The next generation of builders will be in high demand — and with that comes both opportunity and responsibility. I hope my sons, and their peers, bring a renewed commitment to quality, work ethic, and innovation that honors the foundation while shaping the future.”
When troubles arise, as they do for all of us, Norman often says, “The problem isn’t the problem. The problem is the attitude about the problem. That mindset can make the difference between failure and success in both work and life.”
Because Norman uses a hands-on approach with Tristan as they work side by side, he often gets to witness the “lightbulb moment” described by teachers. “I’m especially proud when I see him break down complex problems into manageable pieces and tackle them one step at a time. That ability to think critically and methodically is a sign he’s not just learning tasks — he’s learning leadership.”
Tristan loves apprenticing alongside his dad. Working with his hands, such as when he and his brother Kendall helped build a screened porch at their home, makes him feel fulfilled. He’s excited about his future and the chance to prove he’s trustworthy and reliable like his dad.
“I want to be someone the next generation can look up to — someone you want to complete your job. I feel privileged to provide homes for people locally. I think it builds a good relationship in the process, and I am honored to do it,” he said.

Though some may find it a challenge to work alongside a family member, Tristan said, “We work together well simply because we understand each other and already know what the next move is even without talking.”
