AS THE 2026 season approaches, Bluegill Grill at Holiday Landing Marina & Resort enters a meaningful new chapter — one that honors a lasting legacy while looking ahead with renewed purpose.
For more than two decades, the marina and restaurant have been shaped by the vision and dedication of David K. Patton and his business partner, Steve Smith. The two purchased Holiday Landing Marina & Resort in 2000, steadily transforming it into a thriving destination by adding five additional docks and expanding its reach within the community. In 2003, they opened Bluegill Grill, establishing a place where quality food, live music, and lakeside atmosphere come together.
Following Patton’s passing in November, leadership will carry forward through those closest to him. Ownership has transitioned to his daughters, Rachel and Zoe Patton, alongside longtime partner Steve Smith. Together, they remain committed to preserving the heart of what has made Bluegill Grill a local favorite.
Patton’s influence is deeply woven into every part of the business. Known for his strong work ethic and passion for excellence, he took great pride in the restaurant and its offerings. He spent six months in New Orleans learning from a professional Cajun chef, an experience that helped shape the foundation of the Bluegill Grill menu. His commitment to quality extended beyond the kitchen, as he regularly traveled to Apalachicola, Florida, bringing back fresh Gulf shrimp to serve customers the highest standard of food.
Beyond his role as a business owner, Patton was a mentor to many. Over the years, he guided hundreds of employees, building relationships that made the marina feel like family.

“David was the type of boss who pushed you to be better every day,” said General Manager Jordan Hawkersmith, who has been part of the team since 2010. “He developed relationships that made working with him feel like a family.”
As the season begins, Bluegill Grill will welcome new culinary leadership. Chef Chris McDonald, a seasoned professional with 40 years of experience in restaurants across New York, Atlanta, and Huntsville, joins the team with a vision to enhance and expand the menu. Guests can look forward to new additions such as shrimp and grits, alongside refined versions of longtime favorites.
Beginning in May, Bluegill Grill will host live music every Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m., featuring a mix of local talent and Nashville-based singer-songwriters. Early season performances include artists such as Phat Tuesday, the Huffer Brothers, Justin Williams, Escape Band, and Nashville Songwriter Solo.
The 2026 season officially opens on April 17, with a special moment of remembrance just days prior. A celebration of life for David K. Patton will be held on April 11 at 5 p.m., open to all who knew him. Guests are invited to gather in his honor, with complimentary food, soft drinks, and draft beer available while supplies last.
As Bluegill Grill moves forward, it does so with a deep respect for its roots and a clear vision for the future, continuing to serve the community with excellence, hospitality, and heart. GN
