FOR OVER three decades, Cynthia Young has dedicated her life to education at Cowan Elementary School, a place she describes as her second home. While teaching was not her original career plan, Young’s journey into the classroom reflects a calling she believes was divinely orchestrated.
After seven years as a teaching assistant at Huntland School, she was encouraged by colleagues and mentors to pursue a degree in education. Young’s student teaching at Cowan Elementary provided the perfect launchpad for a career spanning more than 30 years.
“I consider myself a late bloomer,” Young shared, “But I firmly believe God’s grace directs us exactly where we need to be, in His timing. Every challenge and season has prepared me for leadership.”
This perspective shapes her approach to education, blending patience, resilience, and intentionality with a deep trust in God’s guidance. Over the years, she has seen firsthand the profound impact a supportive, caring school environment can have on children and the chain reaction it creates throughout the community.
Now serving as principal of Cowan Elementary, Young views her role as much more than administrative oversight; it is a calling to foster a culture of care, respect, and excellence.
“My primary responsibility is to create an environment where every individual feels seen, safe, and valued long before they even step through our doors,” she explained.
This philosophy extends beyond students to faculty and staff. By ensuring that teachers and support staff feel appreciated and empowered, she believes they can, in turn, deliver their best work and positively impact every student’s learning experience.

“Hearing from her, and from many other former students who entered education, confirms that I am exactly where I am meant to be,” Young reflected. “Knowing I’ve played a part in shaping future educators reminds me why this work matters. It is through these relationships that I can influence the future of our community, one student and one future teacher at a time.”

Long after they have left, she hopes they remember the love, support, and encouragement they experienced within the school’s walls.
