THE PANDEMIC has magnified seniors’ loneliness and isolation, especially those unable to drive. MyRide Bedford and its drivers are lifting spirits and developing friendships while supplying a much-needed service to our community’s growing senior population.
In early March 2020, the first local ride was taken, then the pandemic brought things to a screeching halt. Speaking engagements on the calendar to promote the program were cancelled due to the pandemic. “Only one of them got rescheduled — just one,” Robin Vaickus, coordinator of the local program, said.
And the need to spread the word is of greater urgency now. Grant funds overseen by The Memorial Foundation will run out soon, and the program must be self-sufficient, or it will end.
Vaickus welcomes the opportunity to speak to any group, church, or organization. Spreading the word to seniors is a priority, and volunteer drivers are needed. The financial support of the community is critical to the service’s future.

MyRide Bedford is for seniors aged 60 and older who do not drive but are able to live and walk independently (with or without a cane or walker).
Riders complete a membership application, review health and mobility issues, and pay the annual fee of $25, which includes the first ride. Rides are $4 per round trip, and riders may add up to two more stops for $1 each. Trips can’t exceed three hours. All rides must be prepaid, and drivers aren’t allowed to accept payments. Donations from the community will ensure financial aid for riders and the program’s future success.
Although focused on helping seniors with transportation needs, drivers are finding it equally beneficial. Connections are made as riders and drivers develop friendships, and drivers become the family that many riders are lacking. Everyone’s mental health is boosted.
Drivers must be 18 years or older, have their own insured vehicle, pass a background check, and have a clean driving record. Training is also required although not very time-consuming.
Unlike other public transportation services which are curb-to-curb, MyRide Bedford is door-through-door. Riders may request the driver’s help with their shopping or go in alone if preferred. Some seniors order online and have items picked up and delivered by the service. Riders can place their own orders, or Vaickus is happy to assist them. Rides to doctor appointments and to pick up prescriptions are also common. -GN
