GOOD NEWS IS COMING TO DINNER! We will feature a local food critic’s thoughts as they dine in Manchester. This month, Shannon Beebe visited Southern Sugar Saloon.
JUST OFF the historic square in Winchester sits a place where sweet cravings meet nostalgia — Southern Sugar Saloon. After dinner, when that familiar urge for “just a little something sweet” hit, this Western-themed gem delivered dessert and satisfaction.

Walking through the doors feels like stepping into a charming saloon from another era. The rustic decor, warm wood finishes, and playful western details create an atmosphere that’s both inviting and memorable. It’s the kind of place where kids’ eyes widen instantly, and adults find themselves smiling without realizing it. With over 21 flavors of ice cream to choose from, a colorful wall of scoop-it-yourself candies, and a menu filled with creatively-named Western milkshakes, the hardest decision is simply where to start.
The Lone Ranger milkshake made that choice worthwhile. Built on a foundation of rich chocolate peanut butter ice cream, every sip delivered deep, creamy flavor balanced perfectly between sweet and salty. Mini Reese’s Cups added bursts of chocolate and peanut butter, while chunks of peanut butter cookie dough brought a soft, indulgent texture. The whipped cream piled high on top wasn’t just for looks — it added a light, airy contrast to the richness below. Then came the crushed pretzels — the unexpected hero — adding the perfect salty crunch that tied everything together into one unforgettable treat.
What stood out just as much as the milkshake was the atmosphere around it. Families laughed together, parents watched their children carefully choose candies, and you could tell this wasn’t just about ice cream. It was about tradition. It was about visiting a place that feels special. It was about families bringing their kids to experience a piece of Winchester’s charm while creating memories of their own.

Southern Sugar Saloon is somewhere you go to slow down, indulge, and remember that sometimes the sweetest moments come in a Mason jar, topped with whipped cream, and shared with the people you love. GN
