THE HUM of the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) unit had become the summer’s soundtrack, a constant drone against the chirping crickets and the distant rumble of lawnmowers. But lately, the familiar tune had taken on a sour note. The thermostat refused to read anything less than 78 degrees, though set at 73. The forecast promised another week of scorching temperatures, and the decibel rise seemed to mirror the increasing temperature. Was this just the air conditioner’s summer blues or a prelude to a full-blown meltdown?
Any hint of a problem with our heating and cooling unit leaves us fearing the worst-case scenario. Phillip and Shelley Jones and their crew at Jones Heating & Cooling understand the anxiety and burden of maintaining a home’s HVAC unit. Phillip’s commitment to accepting the challenge of repairing aunit whenever possible prompted him to found the business in 2009.
“Phillip had a passion for fixing things. He wanted to fix HVAC problems, not just replace the unit, so he decided to go into business for himself. This idea to fix a person’s HVAC system was paramount. It didn’t make big profits, but he had a good feeling about helping people,” said Shelley.
Jones Heating & Cooling moved to its present location at the intersection of East Holland Street and North Brittain Street in 2015. Phillip and Shelley renovated the historic two-story, 12,000-square-foot building, maintaining its original oak flooring.
Whether maintaining, repairing, or installing a new unit for residential clients or contractors, the company promises reasonable rates and reliable service. Financial assistance is also available, which is another way Jones Heating & Cooling serves its customers. The business carries a regular inventory of units at its facilities, which is uncommon in the industry.
“On the weekends or holidays, if your unit goes out and you need a replacement, then we can often replace it that same day,” Shelley said. “Otherwise, it is ordered and delivered in one or two business days.”

Jones Heating & Cooling is an authorized representative of Bryant, Lennox, and York and services and stands behind new units for one year at no cost for parts, labor, or service calls. Shelley said all manufacturers offer a 10-year limited parts warranty, valid for the original buyer. Jones Heating & Cooling now offers labor warranties lasting three, five, and 10 years for reasonable costs. The customer never has to pay for labor or parts during their warranty term.
“Our customers continue to praise our service. We are there for them when they need us. Frequently, Phillip will talk the customer through a problem, particularly on the weekends when it could be an expensive service call,” Shelley said.
Area contractors depend on Jones Heating & Cooling to keep their projects on schedule.
“Again, it’s where the reliable service and reasonable rates come in. We’ve never gouged contractors on prices,” said Shelley. “We install HVAC as soon as they need it with no waiting or delaying their construction. Frequently, we have their units in-house weeks prior to installation, so there’s no delay.”
Jones Heating & Cooling is a family business. Phillip’s son, Zach, has worked for the company since graduating high school, and his other son, Phillip James, worked with them for a time. Randy Bee, Nolan Hill, James Beech, and office manager Nicole Sanders round out their team of caring professionals.
Staying on top of the latest technology and equipment, Jones Heating & Cooling attends its vendors’ conventions and trade shows and takes advantage of online classes. Lennox online classes enable on-the-job training and the ability to learn from home.

Phillip, a Flat Creek native, is the son of the late Billy Jones and Carolyn Jones. Shelley was drawn to Bedford County in 2001 from her home state of Texas, thanks to her love of Tennessee walking horses. She and Phillip married in 2011 and built their home on his grandfather’s farm, just down the road from his mother.
The couple, who value family and community, attend Fairlane Church of Christ, where Shelley serves as the women’s ministry leader. The women maintained their connection through the coronavirus pandemic and enjoy retreats and other activities. She is a past board member of the Tony Rice Center and assisted with fundraising for Bedford Builds Habitat for Humanity. Phillip helps local churches with HVAC needs, reducing costs wherever possible.
